ATOM HEART MOTHER is a collaboration between Pink Floyd and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin.
When rock operas by the Kinks and the Who were relatively new and Deep Purple was working with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Pink Floyd entered the '70s with ATOM HEART MOTHER, a symphonic endeavor whose centerpieces are two long compositions divided up into movements. Starting out as a chord sequence written by Dave Gilmour, the title track became a sprawling masterpiece co-written and arranged by Scottish composer Ron Geesin. Throughout 20 minutes of movements titled "Breast Milky," "Funky Dung," and "Mind Your Throat Please," grandiose brass sections bubble over, otherworldly choruses strike a chord of impending doom, and individual Floyd contributions pop up amid all the orchestration.
The other sprawling piece, "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," starts out with the sounds of someone puttering about in his home and occasionally muttering to himself, broken up by either the swirling keyboards of Richard Wright or the dulcet tones of David Gilmour's acoustic guitar. The remaining three tracks are Roger Waters' folkie ballad "If," the baroque psychedelic pop of Wright's "Summer '68," and Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun." ATOM HEART MOTHER is one of the band's more overtly experimental and challenging works; yet it remains a secret favorite of die-hard fans.
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Roger Waters (vocals, bass instrument); Richard Wright (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums, percussion).
Recording information: Abbey Road Studios, London, England; EMI Studios, London, England.
Additional personnel: John Aldiss Choir (background vocals).

For all that menacing, hatchet-happy growl at the beginning of Meddle's opener, "One of These Days," Pink Floyd really weren't about to "cut you into little pieces." Meddle did, however, show that the reigning British monarchs of 1970s-era psychedelia could rip into galloping jams. It also showed what its predecessor, Atom Heart Mother, promised--that the band could excel in long, breathtaking suites that revealed strains of late-classical music, Sun Ra-inspired space explorations, and a patchwork approach to colliding sounds that together took on acid-drenched proportions. And if all that isn't enough, "San Tropez" revealed a playful side of the band, playing footsy with loungy jazz and having good fun in the process.

Relics is a compilation album by Pink Floyd released in 1971. The album was released on May 14 in the UK and July 15 in the United States. A re-mastered CD was released in 1996 with a different album cover; a three-dimensional version of the original sketch drawn by drummer Nick Mason for the initial release.
The release of Relics was sparked by the success of Atom Heart Mother which peaked at #1 on the British charts. The album has been released on numerous occasions, and at times without the proper authority. One such incident involved EMI Australia releasing the album without the band's consent. This led to the LP being withdrawn and the album as a result became a rarity. A reissue of the album in 1996 meant that it could be purchased easily again.

Thanx for the PF. The early singles version and the Relics version of "Careful with that axe Eugene" are very good. |

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams

Wish You Were Here is a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The real star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and pretty great sober too--with David Gilmour getting lots of space for his most lyrical guitar playing ever. And, though the album is big and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery.

Although not in the same vein as the deliciously hallucinogenic earlier Floyd works such as Ummagumma and Dark Side of the Moon, Animals is innovative and musically diverse in its own right. Inspired in part by George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, Roger Waters condemns the avarice and inequalities of capitalism, metaphorically and musically grouping humans as pigs, dogs, and sheep. The pigs are self-righteous hypocrites inflicting their beliefs on everyone else, the dogs greedy money-grabbers, and the sheep witless followers. Dark, cynical, and brilliantly composed, Animals is an ingenious and under-acknowledged album.

The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what arguably ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right; "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtly incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. Also worth noting is the "Another Brick in the Wall/The Happiest Days of Our Lives" medley, which has become a staple of rock radio.

This is not a pretty album. Described as "a requiem for the post-war drama," it is Pink Floyd at their most miserable. In addition to the somber lyrics and themes explored by Roger Waters, it was recorded while the band were so fragmented, they had effectively broken up. Gilmour and Waters' feud has been well documented and this could well have been titled THE FINAL STRAW. The only hint of lightness and humour throughout is in "Not Now John," but only in the shape of irony ("Can't stop lose job mind gone silicon"). Not an album to be played at parties or anniversaries.

If all you know of Pink Floyd is the doomy FM rock of THE WALL or THE FINAL CUT, you owe it to yourself to take the early Floyd crash course that is WORKS. This compilation focuses on the band's early work, beginning with the Syd Barrett-fronted psychedelic pop of their first album and progressing to their more free-form, space-rock excursions. Late-'60s/early-'70s Floyd (the focus of WORKS) was a much more experimental, free-spirited endeavor than the later version. The crazed, psychedelic glory of "See Emily Play" leads seamlessly into the freaky sound collage "Several Species of Small Furry Animals..." and the Eastern-flavored mysterioso strains of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun." The band's crowning achievement, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, is well represented by "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse."
WORKS collects Harvest label recordings from 1968-1973.
Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums).
Producers: Pink Floyd, Norman Smith, Joe Boyd.

After a protracted legal battle over the rights to the Pink Floyd name, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright released 1987's A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON despite Roger Waters' protests. Retaining collaborators from Floyd's past (like producer Bob Ezrin), this Gilmour-led version of the band crafted a number of songs that were as cerebral and introspective as anything Floyd had done in the past. The first single, "Learning to Fly," served as the unofficial anthem for this latest chapter of Pink Floyd.
