John Earl Walker - Come Over Here! (2008)
| Quote: | Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist John Earl Walker became enamored with the blues at age 13, after being exposed to records by legendary guitarists of the genre such as Albert King, Magic Sam, T-Bone Walker, and Freddie King. By his 16th birthday, Walker had already begun playing guitar at local events and in clubs whenever possible. In 1967 he formed the blues-rock band the Plastic People, which included bassist Pete Harris and guitarist Joey Tremelo. Three years later Plastic People changed their name to Creedemore State, then to Plum Nelly when they signed with Capitol Records in 70 and recorded one album for them in '71, they gained national exposure opening shows for B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop, to name just a few. The Plum Nelly lp is now a very rare and sought after collectors item! Following the breakup of Plum Nelly in 1976, Walker formed the first of several incarnations of the John Earl Walker Band. Walker then released his debut CD, I'm Leavin' You, in 2002, followed by Little Miss Perfect and People Are Talkin' two years later. All three discs are available on the New York-based Walkright Records label. John Earl Walker's band consists of veteran players who are gaining world-wide acceptance playing festivals, and through extensive internet, and terrestial radio airplay. John toured Australia in 2006, playing with many of the top players down under. John Earl Walker, and Peter Harris were both original members of Capitol Records recording artists Plum Nelly.
Range of styles from rockin' swingin' blues, to slow smokin' electric blues, to funky heavy guitar grooves with great lyrics and stories in the songs, two killer instrumentals, and a lot of classic guitar riffs played by one of the original masters. |

Jimmy Agren - Various Phobias (2008)

Big Dave McLean - Acoustic Blues: Got 'Em From The Bottom (2008)
| Quote: | Big Dave McLean is finally getting his recognition, at an age when the rest of us are getting around to contemplating retirement. Only in the last decade or so has there been significant inroads into recording this definitive Canadian bluesman.
A masterful guitarist and top notch harpist, McLean’s raw and gravelly vocals bespeak of a life lived to the fullest, and a career spent performing in and around those countless small towns that dot the Canadian prairies. When it comes to the blues, however, McLean’s heart firmly beats to the ghosts of the delta greats--especially the incomparable Muddy Waters, with whom he toured over two decades ago. Just how important the Mojo Man was to the development of Big Dave can be gleaned in an 11-minute tribute, aptly titled ‘Muddy Waters for President’. Actually written for the dean of Chicago bluesmen, Muddy died before getting around to recording it.
McLean’s stage performances also identify him as one of the top bluesmen in Canada and what he knows about the business came to him from blues legends John Hammond Jr. and Muddy Waters. He started out on harmonica in the early '60s and had his first guitar lesson from John Hammond at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1969. Hammond and Muddy Waters became Dave's lifelong musical heroes and friends. What did he learn from the masters? "Well you gotta be courteous," says McLean. "You know, Muddy Waters told me you can have the best guys in the world in your band, and if they gotta go, if they want to branch out and do their own thing, you’re not gonna stop them from doing what they’re destined to do. You might as well aid them along, help them out. And John (Hammond) was much the same, one of the most courteous gentlemen on this planet, you know, totally helpful, inspiring. You know both of them were just wonderful, wonderful men. I’m so pleased that I had the opportunity to even meet them."
Years later, Colin James - certainly one of the best-known Canadian blues artists there is - put himself into the picture.
'Dave McLean has been stalwartly keeping up the blues tradition for years,' says James. 'I first heard him when I was nine, and he blew me away then, and he still does today. He's one of the great undiscovered bluesmen, and people ought to hear him.' As good as his word, James took McLean into his home studio in North Vancouver, called up a bunch of players who have worked with both artists, and cut a record together in three days.
Said Colin: 'Dave has spent his whole life dedicated to the music, and what you hear is pretty well what happened. Everyone who got involved had a ball, and everybody can hear what a good time we all had. Dave is a singer and player that just makes everyone want to do their best.'

Jeremy Spencer - Precious Little (2006)
| Quote: | Precious Little is the new release from British bluesman Jeremy Spencer. His name is far from being unfamiliar to enthusiasts of Sixties British blues, contemporary rock of that era, or especially to fans of early Fleetwood Mac. His slide guitar aptness and subtle piano playing style, along with his dynamically high tonal singing voice, set the stage for the diversity and fullness Fleetwood Mac was to become known for, especially within the astounding range of talent exchanged alongside that of counterparts Peter Green and Danny Kirwan.
Spencer’s emulation qualities in performance, of expressing and imitating just about anyone and anything, was an attribute Mac utilized fittingly, in both the studio and during live shows. His skill was greatly utilized and relied upon, especially by the time Peter Green vacated the band. Even so, Spencer’s last recordings with the band were on the Kiln House album, the record that officially saw the end to Fleetwood Mac’s stint with the blues.
Spencer had other things going on at the time, and still does to this day. While other rockers were sidelined with bouts of alcoholism, substance abuse, and mental instability, Spencer’s shift in lifestyle was a religious calling, one influential enough to draw him away from his successes and accomplishments.
Over the years since, Jeremy Spencer has been involved sporadically in a few different solo projects. However, the new CD on Blind Pig Records appears to be making the biggest splash in the music world, and with good reason. His previous release, 1979's Flee, which, in title alone, sort of described what Spencer had done to Fleetwood Mac, the music business, and his initial fans, was received with only mediocre interest.
Not so for Precious Little.
It’s mostly a blues based album with some contemporary soft rock thrown in. It’s tasteful in quality and diverse in style and technique. Spencer’s blues approach is authentic and precise, just as it was in the early Mac days. His superb slide guitar playing appears to have only gained in competence, as displayed on the album’s opener, ‘Bitter Lemon’, a pleasant shuffle that segues nicely into the railroad bluesy ‘Psychic Waste’. It’s only fitting he’d add a cover of Elmore James’s (his blues hero since the beginning) ‘It Hurts Me Too’ on the record; it’s mellow and easy flowing. ‘Please Don’t Stop’ shows his rockabilly side, and an ageless mannerism, as the song has a youthful and energetic feel. The guitars of both he and Espen Liland are superb on this one. ‘Serene Serena’, a remake of Corrina Corrina’, is pleasant and tuneful.
‘Bleeding Heart’ is a unique slow blues. Spencer gets into some splendid electric slide here, lead guitar also. His singing voice never sounded better. Next is an acoustic blues, ‘Many Sparrows’. Again, there’s some nice slide work going on. There are a couple of pleasing soft rock numbers on the CD as well. Two that come to mind are the Spanish influenced ‘Maria De Santiago’, and the CD’s closer, ‘Precious Little’.
This is a pleasantly listenable CD, and one not to be taken lightly; it’ll be considered a gem to fans of the early Mac sound. The album includes excellent musicians, too, which is always an advantage in producing a perfect CD. It’s nice to hear some new music, genuine and of good quality, come out of the mind and fingers of one of Fleetwood Mac’s greatest original players. |

Muddy Waters - Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live [Legacy Edition] (2003)
| Quote: | Released in 1979, Mississippi Muddy Waters Live is a different sort of Muddy Waters record. By the time he recorded this, he was older, more experienced. After decades with the company, he’d left Chess and was recording for Blue Sky, a label he shared with Johnny and Edgar Winter. And he had just been awarded his first Grammy. His stage presence had been sharpened over the years, but he was still performing his well-known songs. I had to warm up to this record, and it is not my favorite Muddy Waters album by a long shot. But I can’t in anyway casually regard the opportunity of hearing Muddy Waters play.
The original release was seven tracks on one long-playing record. For this re-release, 12 extra tracks were added to fill out this offering into a double disc item. There’s not a bad track among them, but some of the material, like “Deep Down in Florida”, can sound a little too easy-going. Like Muddy honored a request from the producers and the young audience by 1978 didn’t know it was once a tremendously big deal for a black person just to go to the beach anywhere much less Florida, segregation existing in the sand and surf like everywhere else.
And Muddy, who never ever once had the same lead-in to a song, here onstage with Johnny Winter has two lead-ins exactly the same. Unfortunately, both of them placed one after another in a row because somebody (probably the producer) liked the big sound of that siren-like wail announcing a song. But one of those songs, a slow blues ("where the Soul is”, as Waters used to insist) is “Streamline Woman”. This is the one that proves Muddy Waters could still show anybody how it should really be done.
Imagine Muddy onstage with some of these players. Muddy, who had persevered for years and undeniably was one of the great blues guitarists, whose records inspired some of these very same guys onstage with him here to want to pick up a guitar in the first place; a man who had worked for years and was acknowledged as the greatest for years before he even got close enough to serious money to hear it existed. And young Johnny Winter, who had major labels competing for him for the privilege of selling his second album, what was recognized would be his monster solo album, receiving a cool million dollars just to sign on the dotted line before he so much as stepped in the studio or set down a note for it in the early ‘70s. I confess I felt like I was putting up with Winter onstage here trading licks with Muddy, and all his people, too, especially the ones I suspect are his noisy fans in the audience, the ones who yelled “hoo” or “yeah” just as a song was starting. They sound a little more out of it now than they did at the time, like they’re going to start shouting “boogie” at any minute. One particular guy in the audience, I recognized the sound of his boozy screech on three, four, five tracks: Loudmouth drunk dude, I have to tell you that you’re just ridiculous.
Nonetheless, there are some advantages to this record. On this recording the re-engineering yields crystal clear results and the ability to clearly hear some of Waters’s onstage vocal tricks is something to be treasured. The way he squeezes out a staggered long vocal line by pumping the air out of his lower abdomen like it’s a concertina. And finally, the art and craft of the master of prestidigitation is revealed. There’s no hint there’s a furry little creature hidden up the magician’s sleeve until the showman decides it’s time to pull it out of his hat to amaze the audience, and once the cat is out of the bag, the crowd is stunned into momentary silence.
Muddy’s proving he’s the man with the real magic here. He launches into an extended guitar solo on “Streamline Woman” that just sounds unbelievably nasty. Sliding and quivering, with a shrill nasally pitch, this raunchy long solo will make your facial muscles react—your eyes will squint, your lips will pull apart and expose your teeth, and your choppers will clench and snap. As the guitar crescendos to conclusion, the electric squeal sounds exactly like the screech of a naughty little cat in heat and the yowls of a tom flying through the air mid-pounce. |

Doug MacLeod - Whose Truth, Whose Lies? (2000)
| Quote: | | In 2000, you would have been hard-pressed to find a more lowdown blues-oriented recording than singer/guitarist Doug MacLeod's Whose Truth, Whose Lies?, which should appeal to anyone who likes his/her blues dark, shadowy, and moody. This isn't a CD that tries to win you over with slickness; whether MacLeod is going electric or acoustic, he obviously identifies with the simplicity and honesty that characterized the country blues artists of the '30s and '40s. Not that Whose Truth, Whose Lies? sounds like a recording from that time. MacLeod's lyrics obviously aren't pre-World War II lyrics, and he has been influenced by soul, rock, and folk as well as country and urban blues. Not everything on this superb album adheres to a 12-bar format, and some of the tunes fall into the folk category. But even when he is getting into a folk or R&B groove, MacLeod can always be counted on to provide a wealth of blues feeling. Whose Truth, Whose Lies? may not be the work of a purist, but it is certainly compelling. |

Doug MacLeod - A Little Sin (2002)
| Quote: | | Why is Doug MacLeod so little known in the U.S.? He has a following in Europe, and on the basis of this release, he deserves global recognition. Based in Los Angeles, he brings a wonderful, literate turn of lyric to the blues, writing about everyday events and emotions in a way that simply pulls at the heart (listen to the title track for a prime example). Musically he goes for very spare arrangements, just his own guitar work starkly supported at times by bass and drums (and very occasional autoharp), but that's all that's needed. He can sing the blues like a devil, and play pretty damn well, too. He's not afraid of stretching a piece out — "The New Panama Limited" runs more than ten minutes, for instance — but they never seem padded. MacLeod has plenty to say and does it in a way that's powerfully hypnotic. The world either needs more as good as him, or perhaps just greater fame for this one. He's a gem, and so is this disc. |

John Sebastian & J-Band - I Want My Roots (1996)
| Quote: | | John Sebastian's early group affiliations in the Even Dozen Jug Band and the Lovin' Spoonful rose out of the casual party jug-band music that enjoyed a brief period of popularity during the folk boom, mixing folk elements with the more celebratory elements of country and blues with a touch of zany fun thrown in. Combining with guitarist Jimmy Vivino and drummer James Wormworth, Sebastian brought in original jute player Fritz Richmond from the Jim Kweskin Jug Band to form the J-Band, co-credited on this album, which updates jug music for the '90s. Sebastian opens the proceedings with the old Spoonful song "Mobile Line" for reference, and then things get really crazy. Sebastian and Vivino contribute four originals, but the heart of the album is material by the likes of Sleepy John Estes and Blind Willie McTell, and guest stars Paul Risell, Annie Raines, Rory Block, Yank Rachell, Richard Crooks, and John Simon are just as likely to be playing or singing as the nominal leader or his band, which can mean that Sebastian is frequently a sideman on his own album, especially during a three-song Rachell mini-set near the album's end. No matter. The result is like a particularly enjoyable club date in which friends keep stumbling onstage from the bar to sing a verse or play a lick. In other words, the spirit of jug band music has been brought back to life. |

For over 30 years he has been winning the hearts of audiences all over Europe with his own charismatic brand of good rocking blues. Born shortly after the end of the second world war, he moved to Hamburg, Germany in the mid 1960s and has become the closest thing to a genuine folk hero to be found in these parts.
His unique open-tuned fingerpicking guitar style is a fascinating blend of delta blues and rock&roll elements, combining rhythmic bass lines with melody and chord parts in a manner sometimes reminiscent of Big Joe Williams, at other times of Keith Richards and sometimes even of David Lindley. His playing seems deceptively simple at first, but reveals itself as multi-layered and complex, with an effortless groove which has inspired a host of imitators. He is also one of the few guitarists to master the difficult art of playing in different modal positions on the open G tuning.
Abi is also a remarkable singer. His raw and powerful voice, steeled by years of playing on the streets, is totally convincing, whether delivering deep blues or definitive renditions of soulful ballads. When the weather is good and his busy touring schedule permits, he can still sometimes be seen in the Hamburg inner city today, trying out new material on the “toughest stage in the world”.

Dressed in brightly colored feathers, sequins and rhinestones, the self-described “fat black drag queen trapped in a white woman’s body” belts, growls and croons her selection of original blues and classic rock tunes. Long John Baldry

He was a well-liked figure on the London club circuit, and in fact the Beatles took him on as a guest on one of their 1964 British TV specials, at a time when the Fab Four could have been no bigger, and Baldry was virtually unknown.
Ironically, his greatest commercial success came not with blues, but orchestrated pop ballads that echoed Engelbert Humperdinck. The 1967 single "Let the Heartaches Begin" reached number one in Britain, and Baldry had several other small British hits in the late '60s, the biggest of which was "Mexico" (1968). (None of these made an impression in the U.S.)
The commercial success of his ballads led Baldry to forsake the blues on record for a few years. He returned to blues and rock in 1971 on It Ain't Easy, for which Rod Stewart and Elton John shared the production duties. The album contained a tiny American chart item, "Don't Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock'n'Roll," and Stewart and John split the production once again on the 1972 follow-up, Everything Stops for Tea. Baldry never caught on as an international figure, though, and by 1980 had become a Canadian citizen. He continued to record, and did commercial voice-overs as well as the voice of Doctor Robotnik in children's cartoons. B.B. King - Live At Montreux 1993 (2009)
| Quote: | B.B. King is King of the Blues for a couple of reasons. The first is his phenomenal talent as a guitarist. His vibrato technique is the stuff of legend, and his music has always mixed tasteful lyricism and joyful energy. But, there are a lot of very talented guitarists in the world and only one King. The other thing that cements B.B.'s status is his relentless touring schedule. After a string of albums during the '60s blues revival (including the essential Live at the Regal), B.B. recorded less and toured more, averaging three hundred nights a year for decades (throughout, I might add, his fifties, sixties, and seventies; now in his eighties he's finally slowing down). With all his passion, and that much practice, B.B. took his tremendous talent and honed it to a sharp edge that he's maintained for longer than most bands can stay together. With a crack team of musicians in tow, B.B. has toured the world, earning the right to his crown. In that time he's appeared at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival almost twenty times. Now we have B.B. King: Live at Montreux 1993, a DVD of a show from 1993, and it's everything B.B. fans could hope for.
In almost 100 minutes, B.B. and his band run through seventeen tracks, including newer songs and old favorites:

This is pretty much a textbook B.B. King show. Fresh off his Blues Summit, which saw him team up with other blues greats like John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy, B.B. King and his band are in fine form. The show opens with the backing band (including guitar, bass, drums, horns, and a piano) warming the crowd up before the man himself takes the stage. They then proceed to run through a number of high-energy tunes (including a fantastic reading of "Let the Good Times Roll"). B.B. stalks the stage, playing his guitar Lucille for all he's worth, making his usual expressive faces. Towards the end of the set the band brings it down a little (and B.B. brings out a chair to sit in), and the set ends with the beautiful lament of "The Thrill is Gone."
Normally I don't notice how concerts are filmed (unless either the band or the camerawork is really bad), but I was struck by how well this show was filmed. Although B.B. is the star player, he works with a tight ensemble, and the look reflects that. There are numerous shots of the whole band rocking out, as well as close-ups on individual players when they take solo turns. Then, there's the handling of B.B. himself. One of the things he's known for is the expressive faces he makes while playing, and we see plenty of that. Also, knowing how many guitar fanatics (myself included) idolize B.B.'s technique, there are also numerous loving shots of his hands as he plays. It's like a master class in electric blues and makes for compelling viewing.
There's also nothing to complain about with either the audio or video of this disc. The transfer is bright and clear, with no obvious compression or source difficulties, and the DTS and Dolby Digital surround options are clear with good separation. I found B.B.'s guitar tone especially wonderful to listen too. Purists might complain about the lack of a PCM track, but that's a small problem considering the quality of the other tracks. The only other complaint about the presentation might be the lack of extras—even some posters from the time would be appreciated, but all we get is a well-written set of liner notes.
If I have one complaint about this disc, it's that everything might be too perfect. The band is tight and B.B. does his thing well, but there's something missing that could have taken this night from "special" to "magical." I'm not sure what it is, but maybe a fresh guitarist (especially one from his Blues Summit album) or a slightly different set of arrangements. Really though, I'm just quibbling: what's here is great and nothing to complain about.
Longtime fans of the King of the Blues will be happy to add this DVD to their collection, and this set is also a compelling choice for an introduction to B.B. King's magnificent version of the blues. We can only hope that some of the other B.B. King appearances at Montreux get this same treatment. |

Bill Simms, Jr. & Mark Lavoie - American Blues Roots Duo (2008)
| Quote: | Acoustic blues is one of music's most difficult idioms to master. Free from the bombast of loud guitars and pounding drums, it requires an almost Zen-like approach that aspires to be simple and profound at the same time. An excellent example of some folks getting it right is the acoustic duo of guitarist Bill Sims Jr.. and harmonica player Mark LaVoie. On their latest release, American Blues Roots Duo, Sims and LaVoie lay down some of the sweetest country blues heard in these parts in quite some time.
Their sound is down home, back porch, crossroads, and hellhounds all at once and takes listeners back to a time before electricity turned the blues up loud, when feel and soul were everything, and when most musicians played simply because playing felt good. Between them, Sims and LaVoie have played with legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and many more, another indicator that they are doing something right.
The songs here are classics and are treated to fine renditions accenting the interplay between Sims? smooth vocals and LaVoie's deeply soulful harp playing. The key to this album is truly taking one's time in listening and digesting what is really going down. There is much genius here, but, because of the quiet nature of this style, it can be easy to miss.
Those with the patience to prospect here will be rewarded with a set of songs that show us what the beginnings of the music we love sounded like and how valid this stuff still is. Highlights include "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad", "Must Have Been The Devil", and "Telephone Blues". |

In case you haven't heard, this cat is one of the baddest country blues artists walking the planet today. His style incorporates a number of worlds. New Orleans, country blues, pop music (by that I mean Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, and especially J.J. Cale) and Country and gospel music.
He's a dual citizen, and tours widely in Canada, where he won a Juno (their Grammy) for his 2000 release Gust of Wind. An infectious rolling groove develops in the way he combines his super funky thumb/index attack on the electric guitar, his deep harmonica chops, and the amplified footboard, and it rocks the room. His vocals are smoky, with a trace of sweetness, streetwise and well traveled. He's known, sometimes, for playing an old Gibson J-50 acoustic, but for me the essential Ray is on the thin hollow body electrics of Epiphone or Gibson, he makes those skinny guitars jump like few I've ever seen or heard.
Along with the artist, Roll It Down was co-produced with two Canadians, Rob Heaney and the ubiquitous Colin Linden. It started at Fast Forward Studio in Montreal with Ray, and Geoff Arsenault on percussion, moved on to Deep Field Studio in Nashville with Colin Linden producing (we sure like the records he makes, see reviews of Stephen Fearing and Susan Werner) and some hand picked Nashville trackers. Jonell Mosser sang some background vocals, and drummer Bryan Owings from Buddy Miller's band, the legendary Joey Spampinato from NRBQ on bass, the mighty Richard Bell on B3, and Ray's talented longtime compadre Brad Hayes on guitar, all contributed to the band songs. Ray's a distinctive and superior guitarist, and he cut all the slide tracks and the signature funky rhythm grooves, and all the guitars on the title track. Joel Zifkin cameos on violin on two tracks. |

find common roots between country-rock, American blues and Eastern Europe
genuine folk, thus conveying the same message through complementary ways of
expression. Their sound is chameleonic - to induce the rock/blues/ethno state of mind,
the blend is a well-measured recipe with a bit of passion, a bit of subtle self-humor, a
lot of technique in whatever device that produces some sort of sound, from overdriven
guitar down to poplar leaf -- and a good dose of temper.
They are having concerts all over Europe as well as in the USA.
Their repertoire of traditional blues grew organically on stage. It grew out of having
some fun during a jam session. Their first tape, ‘Sitting on top of the World’, 1994,
was influenced by traditional folk music; these influences were taken further with
their first CD ‘Plum Brandy Blues’. The project is also called ‘The Groove Distillery’
since they invited many guest musicians. These musicians used instruments like
cimbalom, taragot (a type of clarinet), leaf, ceramic birds... This recording is a
brilliant testimony to the soul of the band. A delicious mixture of blues and folk music
from the Balkan area, with some jazzy-funky grooving on top, and a whole lot of
humour. Nightlosers’ music is full of SPAMises and original turns. |

Albert Collins & The Icebreakers - Live In Japan (1984)

King's LIVE AT THE REGAL or reach the musically telepathic heights of THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILLMORE EAST, it does offer a fine snapshot of a talented veteran band at work, churning out honest, gutbucket funky blues circa 1982. LIVE IN JAPAN came in the middle of Collins' long tenure on Alligator, and the Icebreakers were his steady band for most of that time. Tenor man A.C. Reed was a recording artist in his own right, and Collins generously gives Reed a spot at the vocal mike in this set, for the stompin' shuffle "Jealous Man." Generally, though, it's Collins' show, and he makes the most of it, coming out stinging on the opening vamp "Listen Here," stretching out on the set's other slow blues, "If Trouble Was Money," and doing a cool segue from "Stormy Monday" into the instrumental "Skatin'."
Recorded live at Kudan Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan on December 21, 1982. Originally released on Yupiteru Records.
