Calexico - Garden Ruin (2006)
mp3 VBR~198kpbs | 53MB | 40:35 min.
Indie Rock, Alternative Country-Rock, Americana, Alternative Rock, Post-Rock/ Experimental
Quote:

Garden Ruin is the fifth studio album from Tucson, Arizona indie rock band Calexico. It is notable for being the first Calexico album to feature no instrumental tracks, instead relying on a more direct, pop-style approach. Foregoing what has been described as "indie-mariachi", the band took their music in a different direction, and the result is a more straightforward indie rock album. <Wikipedia>

Quote:
It's what Sigur Ros might sound like if they came from Arizona, and it's truly excellent. <Amazon>

I'd never wanted Calexico to change, but the new direction suits them well, proving that even in the face of radical metamorphosis, they remain as stunning and distinctive as ever. <Pitchfork>

The best thing about Garden Ruin is the way they look beyond country borders to engage with the wider world, both culturally and musically. <BBC>

1. "Cruel" – 3:59 (Joey Burns, John Burns)
2. "Yours and Mine" – 2:30 (Joey Burns, John Convertino)
3. "Bisbee Blue" – 2:48 (Joey Burns, John Burns, JD Foster, John Convertino, Dan Coleman)
4. "Panic Open String" – 4:09 (Joey Burns, John Convertino)
5. "Letter to Bowie Knife" – 3:06 (Joey Burns, John Burns)
6. "Roka (Danza de la Muerte)" – 3:42 (Joey Burns)
7. "Lucky Dime" – 2:33 (Joey Burns, John Convertino)
8. "Smash" – 3:45 (Joey Burns, John Burns)
9. "Deep Down" – 4:31 (Joey Burns)
10. "Nom de Plume" – 3:19 (Paul Niehaus, Joey Burns)
11. "All Systems Red" – 6:09 (Joey Burns, John Convertino, JD Foster)

Yo La Tengo - President Yo La Tengo/New Wave Hot Dogs (1996)
mp3 VBR~204kpbs | 99MB | 70:33 min.
Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Noise Pop, Lo-Fi
Quote:
Yo La Tengo was in many respects the quintessential critics' band: in addition to its adventurous eclecticism, defiant independence, and restless creative ambition -- three qualities that virtually guarantee music press acclaim -- the group's frontman, Ira Kaplan, even tenured as a rock scribe prior to finding success as a performer. So frequently compared to the Velvet Underground that they even portrayed the legendary group in the 1996 film I Shot Andy Warhol, the Hoboken, NJ-based unit explored the extremes of feedback-driven noise rock and sweetly melodic pop, shading its work with equal parts scholarly composure and fannish enthusiasm.
Two records now available as a single CD, these really show off Yo La Tengo's ability to create musical extremes. New Wave Hot Dogs has the firm pop sense and strong songwriting of the debut, but President Yo La Tengo offers up a little more free-form skronk in the ten-minute live version of "The Evil That Men Do," a gloriously squalling, over-the-top crash-and-bash session which proves how liberating and fun sonic dissonance can be. Just in case you don't like that sort of thing, "Evil" also shows up as a straight-ahead folk-rock track. This is a great collection of material that, as well as anything else they have recorded, gets to the heart of what makes this band tick. <AMG>

This disc contains both the New Wave Hot Dogs and President Yo La Tengo albums as well as the Asparagus Song single.
President Yo La Tengo originally released in 1989 on Coyote Records.
New Wave Hot Dogs originally released in 1987 on Coyote Records.

Sebadoh - Bakesale [1994]
mp3 320kpbs | 90MB | 41:51 min. | Sub Pop
Quote:
Sebadoh is an indie rock band formed in Westfield, Massachusetts by Eric Gaffney and Dinosaur Jr bass player Lou Barlow. Along with such bands as Pavement and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer lo-fi music, a style of indie rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques, often on four-track machines.

Bakesale is the fifth and most critically acclaimed album by Sebadoh, released in 1994. It is considerably less noisy than the band's previous albums. It was produced by Tim O'Heir. The album cover is a picture of one-year-old Lou Barlow, taken by his mother. <Wikipedia>

Superchunk - No Pocky For Kitty [1991]
mp3 320kpbs | 74MB | 33:37 min.
Quote:
No Pocky for Kitty is Superchunk's second studio album. It was recorded April 21-23, 1991, at the Chicago Recording Company by Steve Albini and released on Matador Records in 1991.
It was ranked #16 on Amazon's 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums Of All Time.

Quote:
While many music historians would choose Fugazi as the band most emblematic of the D.I.Y. ("do it yourself") independent music scene of the '90s, a perhaps less-obvious but equally valid choice would be Chapel Hill's hometown heroes, Superchunk. However, while Fugazi fretted over the inherent contradictions of integrity and celebrity, Superchunk just plain rocked out. Chugging along like a sped-up REM-meets-the-Ramones, were clearly having too much fun on revved-up ditties like "Skip Steps 1 & 3" and "Sprung a Leak" to preach.
Either way, Superchunk packed more manic energy into its records than any ten other bands from Chapel Hill combined. "NO POCKY FOR KITTY" is a cruelly undervalued landmark of an album and the song "Punch Me Harder" is the great lost should-have-been hit of the same decade. Of course Superchunk couldn't maintain this manic velocity throughout its career (and outside of the Ramones, who could?), but "NO POCKY" is a perfect snapshot of the band at its bouncy best.

1. "Skip Steps 1 & 3" - 3:07
2. "Seed Toss" - 2:59
3. "Cast Iron" - 3:48
4. "Tower" - 2:47
5. "Punch Me Harder" - 2:13
6. "Sprung a Leak" - 3:01
7. "30 Xtra" - 2:31
8. "Tie a Rope to the Back of the Bus" - 2:54
9. "Press" - 2:08
10. "Sidewalk" - 3:02
11. "Creek" - 1:41
12. "Throwing Things" - 3:26

Radio Moscow - Brain Cycles (2009)
Blues-rock, Garage Rock Revival, Psychedelic rock
mp3 VBR~256kpbs | 77MB | 44:29 min.
Quote:
Radio Moscow are a blues-rock trio from Ames, IA, with a similarly anachronistic retro feel. Where bands like the Black Keys (whose guitarist Dan Auerbach produced Radio Moscow's debut album) and the White Stripes play with a stripped-down, modern take on the old power trio sound, Radio Moscow hark back to the glory days of the power trio, when Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Blue Cheer roamed the earth and the power of the Marshall stack was unquestioned. <AMG>

1. "Just Don't Know"
2. "Broke Down"
3. "The Escape"
4. "No Good Women"
5. "Brain Cycles"
6. "250 Miles"

Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009)

mp3 320kpbs | 104MB | 48:17 min. | Released: April 14, 2009.
Quote:
After almost 20 years of using the alias Smog for his music, Bill Callahan switched to his given name for his releases after 2005's A River Ain't Too Much to Love. For 2009's Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle, Callahan returned to the more intimate, acoustic-based sound of latter-era Smog albums, featuring string and brass arrangements by Brian Beattie.

Quote:
Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is a record of grand hopes and epic imagery, and powerful, uplifting music--the most accomplished of his 20-year career. <Mojo>

Eagle is the ultimate cohesion of Callahan’s singular storytelling and bewitching delivery. <Paste>

His vantage from Eagle is one of textured ambivalence; his images split and shimmer like double-exposures, immediately releasing an obvious meaning quickly followed by a subtler one that equivocates the first. <Pitchfork>

1. "Jim Cain" – 4:39
2. "Eid Ma Clack Shaw" – 4:19
3. "The Wind and the Dove" – 4:34
4. "Rococo Zephyr" – 5:42
5. "Too Many Birds" – 5:27
6. "My Friend" – 5:12
7. "All Thoughts Are Prey to Some Beast" – 5:52
8. "Invocation of Ratiocination" – 2:41
9. "Faith/Void" – 9:44

Gogol Bordello - Voi-La Intruder (1999)
Gypsy punk | mp3 320kpbs | 116MB | 56:58 min.
Quote:
Voi-La Intruder is the debut album by Gogol Bordello, released in 1999 by Rubric Records.

Gogol Bordello is a multi-ethnic Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999 and is known for its theatrical stage shows. Much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music, as its core members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub as well as multiple languages. Phill Jupitus described the band as "a bit like The Clash and The Pogues having a fight... in Eastern Europe," while Kenneth Partridge of The Hartford Courant described lead singer Eugene Hόtz's voice as "somewhere between that of Borat and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog". <Wikipedia>

Combining elements of punk, gypsy music, and Brecht-ian cabaret, Gogol Bordello tells the story of New York's immigrant diaspora through debauchery, humor, and surreal costumes. <AMG>

Jason Lytle - Yours Truly, the Commuter (2009)
Release Date: May 19, 2009 | mp3 VBR V0 | 75MB | 42:22 min.
Quote:
After 15 years at the helm of Grandaddy the Modesto, California quintet whose celebrated five-album run started as a project in Lytle s bedroom and took him around the world Jason Lytle returns with a new collection of songs that are at once a continuation of and elaboration on the musical and lyrical ideas he explored in that band. The title Yours Truly, The Commuter tells it all: songs about the treks we all make, from one state to another, from inner lives to outer, and the tolls those travels take. Musically, the dreamy soundscapes mirror the dramatic environment of Lytle s newly-adopted Montana, where the record was written and recorded, while the twang of central California farmland remains in the inflection and phrasings of the Modesto native s unmistakable voice. Electronic flourishes collide with acoustic guitars and soulful piano parts, recreating Lytle s signature electro-lo-fi atmospheres. I wrote all the songs, I engineered the whole thing, I recorded it, I played all the instruments -- this is what I do, says Lytle, and we are glad he s taking passengers on this journey.

1. "Yours Truly, the Commuter"
2. "Brand New Sun"
3. "Ghost of My Old Dog"
4. "I Am Lost (And the Moment Cannot Last)"
5. "Birds Encouraged Him"
6. "It's the Weekend"
7. "Fόrget It"
8. "This Song Is the Mute Button"
9. "Rollin' Home Alone"
10. "You're Too Gone"
11. "Flying thru Canyons"
12. "Here for Good"

The Dirty Projectors are the project of Dave Longstreth, a former Yale student who left college to become one of the most prolific and unique indie singer/songwriters of the early 2000s.
His first album, The Graceful Fallen Mango was released under his own name and introduced his distinctive arrangements of both lo-fi and hi-fi production. Longstreth released his first album as "Dirty Projectors" in 2003 entitled The Glad Fact, on the Western Vinyl label. In 2005 he released The Getty Address, a concept album surrounding musician Don Henley; in 2007 he released Rise Above, an album of Black Flag songs as reimagined from memory. In 2007 he also did a Take-Away Show acoustic video session shot by Vincent Moon. In April 2008, Dirty Projectors signed with Domino Records, and the label announced the release of Bitte Orca for June 9, 2009. 2009 also found the band collaborating with David Byrne on the song "Knotty Pine" for the compilation album, Dark Was the Night. On May 8, 2009, members of Dirty Projectors will collaborate with Bjφrk to perform an original composition by Longstreth, written for five voices and acoustic guitar, as part of a charity concert to benefit Housing Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter for homeless men, women, and children suffering from AIDS. The concert is to be held at the Housing Works Bookstore & Cafι in downtown New York City.

Reviewing the version of Bitte Orca which leaked onto the internet two months before its official release date, Stereogum called the album "stunning" and "pay-off for joining Dave Longstreth on his years of recorded self-discovery." Immediately after it was leaked, Bitte Orca was named an "Editor's Pick" by the music blog 20 Watts. Prefix called the album "a breakthrough, which filters their left-field avant aesthetics through more conventional song structures. <Wikipedia>

The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth (2006)
mp3 VBR~234kpbs | 84MB | 52:19 min.
Post-Punk Revival, Indie Rock, Garage Rock Revival
Quote:
First Impressions of Earth is the third album by The Strokes. It was released in January 2006 (see 2006 in music), having been preceded by lead single "Juicebox" some weeks earlier.

First Impressions of Earth is widely seen as an expansion beyond The Strokes' first two albums, Is This It and Room on Fire. The album received mixed reviews from critics, unlike their previous material which were generally acclaimed. "Heart in a Cage" was the album's second single, followed by "You Only Live Once". NME rated First Impressions of Earth at #8 in its Albums of the Year 2006 list.

First Impressions of Earth entered the UK album chart at #1, The Strokes' first one at the top spot, while it reached #4 in the US, with an entry sales week of 88,000 units, somewhat below the performance of its predecessors. As of October 2006, the album had sold 271,000 units in the US, falling short of gold certification. Although the album was the band's first release to reach #1 on any chart worldwide, it is the only one not to reach UK platinum status, and spent much less time on the charts than the previous albums. <Wikipedia>

The Field - Yesterday and Today (2009)

Relase Date: May 18th 2009 | 320kpbs
Quote:
This album just leaked a few days ago. Anyone who spent any considerable amount of time with this guy's debut LP from a couple years ago knows this he's one talented cookie. I don't have too much to say about this album yet as I've only gotten one listen so far, but I am pretty well blown away. It's not quite as minimal sounding as his previous stuff, which may please some, may agitate others. I think some of that effect is missing because of his more organic approach; he uses a band for this album instead of just machines. The title of the opening track sort of speaks to that deviation from technology (as much as a techno artist could) with its awesome title "I Have the Moon, You Have the Internet."
What really blew my socks off here is the KORGIS cover "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" which he made for the Eternal Sunshine OST. When I saw the track name, I thought of the Beck song, but I figured it was just a common title and not a cover, little did I know it would turn out to be probably the BEST COVER I HAVE EVER HEARD (upper cased for those skimming over the writing)! The song "The More That I Do" is also an immediate highlight, and I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time with this considering how well the debut sunk in. Again, this music is great for walks...or runs for some tracks.
The download is a two-parter, it's 6 tracks in 320kbps coming in at an hour.
