Centro-Matic - Fort Recovery (2006)

mp3 VBR~256kpbs | 85MB | Indie Rock, Alternative Country-Rock
Quote:
Centro-Matic's Fort Recovery is what the magic hour -- that time just before the sun goes down when everything looks burnished and beautiful, but also a little sad -- would sound like if it were turned into music. Every song, from rousing rockers like "For New Starts" and "Take a Rake" to "Covered Up in Mines" and "I See Through You," positively radiates a bittersweet warmth. Over the band's decade-long existence, Centro-Matic's Will Johnson has built a reputation for being a wry, evocative writer, and titles like "The Refugees Have Won" and lyrics like "Patience for the Ride"'s "you can't touch the forces of our hurricane hearts" are a welcome reminder of why that is. Indeed, the main thing that's changed over the band's career is the sound quality of their albums. They've gone from below bare-bones recordings to detailed productions like the one that graces Fort Recovery. Centro-Matic sounds equally good in either setting, but the interesting drum sounds on "Take the Maps and Run" and the electronic flourishes sprinkled throughout the album make the most of the album's polish. They also make the most of staying in that fuzzy area between alt-country and indie rock; while that's not a particularly big territory, they've mastered it. With Centro-Matic, more of the same is definitely a good thing, and Fort Recovery shows that they just keep getting better at what they're doing. -- AMG

The Cardigans - Best of (2008)

FLAC (sep. tracks) | 557MB
Quote:
Unfortunately, the Cardigans are best known in the United States for their 1997 single "Lovefool," a fluke Top 40 hit thanks to its inclusion on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's splashy updating of Romeo and Juliet. In that context, the Swedish quintet came off as Europop lightweights, Ace of Base with a bit more indie cred. This truly did the group a disservice, because as Best of the Cardigans reveals, Nina Persson and company were a truly gifted pop band that delivered some of the most intoxicating singles of the '90s. Proceeding in chronological order from 1994's Emmerdale through 2005's Super Extra Gravity, the 22 tracks are front-loaded with many of the band's finest, from their winsome debut single "Rise and Shine" to the tongue in cheek lounge pop of the singles from 1995's Life, the glorious "Carnival" (arguably their career high point) and "Daddy's Car." A more conventional alt-rock sound enters circa 1997's First Band on the Moon's bitter kiss-off "Been It," and by the time of later albums like the electronica-inspired Gran Turismo and the moody Long Gone Before Daylight, the Cardigans seemed stung by misapprehensions about their earlier work that had overlooked its ironic humor and seen only the bubblegummy surface. That seems to have changed, however, if the 22-second long "Bonus Track" and the glitchy dance-rock take on Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House," with guest vocals by Tom Jones, that end the disc are any indication. -- AMG

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly (2009)

Release Date: September 15, 2009 | mp3 VBR~224kpbs
Quote:
It's been eight years since Hope Sandoval released an album with The Warm Inventions (and thirteen years if you Mazzy Star fans are counting). Since then, she's made sporadic appearances on songs from Vetiver, Bert Jansch, Richard X, Death In Vegas and Air, which has only added to the SPAMise surrounding the release of Through The Devil Softly'. Sandoval has once again teamed up with My Bloody Valentine drummer, Colm Ó Cíosóig, just as they did on 2001's Bavarian Fruit Bread, and if the first leaked song, "Blanchard," is any indication, the new album looks to continue much in the same abstract, swooning, folky vein. <prefixmag>

Since the release of Mazzy Star s debut album She Hangs Brightly, Hope Sandoval has defined the sound and style of California psychedelic dream pop. The world took notice when the SPAMise breakthrough single, Fade Into You, hit the airwaves and heavy rotation at MTV. Sandoval s trademark vocals and beauty helped to make her a modern day music icon. Now the revered singer returns with her long awaited post-Mazzy Star sophomore album, Through The Devil Softly. Since her time with Mazzy Star, the sought after vocalist has collaborated with artists from across the musical landscape: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Air, Death in Vegas, The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack and Bert Jansch.
In 2001 she joined Colm Ó Cíosóig (of My Bloody Valentine), and backing Irish band Dirt Blue Gene, to form Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, and released their debut Bavarian Fruit Bread. Now on Through The Devil Softly, the definitive star of the Paisley Underground scene reignites her trademark sound in an epic journey across the 11 song album. The project continues the laid-back, slowcore sound they are renowned for and places Sandoval s sensuous, hypnotic voice in the forefront. Recorded at home in Berkley, the spare, subtle arrangements reinforce Sandoval s gentle vocal style. <Amazon>

Missy Higgins- On A Clear Night (2007)

mp3 320kpbs | 88MB | 37:54 min.
Quote:
On a Clear Night debuted at the top of the Australian charts in May 2007, knocking Silverchair's Young Modern down to the number two spot and solidifying Missy Higgins' status as an Aussie A-lister. Combining sass with sweet sentiment, the album marks a progression for the young songwriter, who was introduced in 2004 as the Melbourne equivalent of Vanessa Carlton. There's more in Higgins' cannon than piano-heavy ballads, though, and her sophomore disc relies heavily on the acoustic guitar, which lends a saucy swagger to songs like "100 Round the Bends" and "Secret." Higgins' lyrics aren't overtly erotic, but there's more than a hint of sex in the way she sings those two tracks, punctuating her endearingly accented vocals with moments of brazen, full-throated belting. She's part Sarah McLachlan and part Amy Winehouse, a family friendly singer with hipster appeal and, perhaps, a hint of diva potential. And lest this combination seem a bit too calculated, Higgins is still capable of crafting songs like "Sugarcane," a lilting piece of pastoral pop that builds on the template of 2004's Sound of White. "Angela," "I'm Going North," and "Forgive Me" all continue that thread -- but here, Higgins' piano remains de-emphasized in favor of an earthy, folksy instrumental blend. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, and acoustic bass are tastefully swirled together by former Crowded House producer Mitchell Froom, who knows when to adorn the songs with layers of sound and when to sharpen the focus on Higgins' ever-improving voice. Like her fellow countrymen in Silverchair, Missy Higgins' hometown popularity doesn't fully translate overseas, where American audiences have yet to replace those vague Vanessa Carlton comparisons with a proper understanding of her folksy, feisty, and altogether fun music. Nevertheless, On a Clear Night makes a very solid argument for reevaluation, and there's certainly no sophomore slump here.

Sparks - The Seduction of Ingram Bergman (2009)

Quote:
Sparks’ Ron and Russell Mael have been commissioned by the Swedish National Public radio Sveriges Radio to write and produce an original radio musical. Sparks’ creation, “The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman,” is a musical fantasy based on the internationally acclaimed film director Ingmar Bergman.

The radio musical will be broadcast in Sweden in August 2009. An album with the original Swedish version will be released as a limited edition in Sweden. An English version will subsequently be released internationally.

“As Americans we have almost abandoned radio drama and it was truly exhilarating for us to work in a medium where the imagination of the listener is so integral a part of the work. Aside from our love of Bergman, we have a love of Orson Welles and his use of the medium of radio was something that inspired us in this work.” – Ron Mael

Though his films’ themes have traditionally centred on matters of death, faith, God’s existence, and the struggle to find love and meaning in our lives, Bergman is confronted in the musical by the lure of a mythological Hollywood seemingly at odds with all he stands for—a Hollywood that tempts him and ultimately tries to control him. What starts as an exploration by Bergman of the possible mutual benefits of his working in Hollywood turns into a Kafkaesque nightmare, a nightmare ended with the aid of a most unlikely saviour.

“When Sveriges Radio approached us with the idea of creating our own musical for the radio, we were excited about the prospect yet hesitant at trying to figure a way to successfully fulfil their only restrictions with the project: that it incorporates the Swedish language in some manner. Once we came up with the idea of placing one of the ultimate Swedish icons and one of our favourite film directors, Ingmar Bergman, in a fantasy setting we became extremely excited about this musical and knew we were on to something special.” – Russell Mael

International broadcasts of the musical are being sourced and Sparks are planning to present the musical in a live format as well hoping to see the project be made into a motion picture.

“Although The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman was commissioned as a radio musical, we always saw it in cinematic terms. We hope that the listeners will be able, in their own minds, to see the same movie that we wrote on hearing it on the radio and that at some point an actual film can be made of this piece. We would also like to present The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman as a theatre piece and perhaps this will be the next stage show for Sparks.”

A.A. Bondy - When the Devil's Loose (2009)

mp3 320kpbs | 79MB | 37:02 min.
Quote:
When A.A. Bondy was lead singer for Verbena, the band was often accused of lifting large portions of its sound and style from the Rolling Stones (on its first album) and Nirvana (on Into the Pink). So with that history, it makes a certain sense that Bondy's second solo effort, When the Devil's Loose, recalls another artist, in this case Ryan Adams. The largest part of this comes from Bondy's voice, which bears a reasonable aural resemblance to Adams and his sweetly jaded tone, though Bondy shows off a bit more sonic weight and a less studied demeanor. But the music isn't all that far away from Adams either, though if this is by design rather than accident, at least Bondy has the good sense to embrace the straightforward and emotionally powerful sound of Heartbreaker rather than the more scattershot style of Adams' subsequent solo efforts. Most of When the Devil's Loose was cut with just a bassist (Macey Taylor) and drummer (Paul Buchignani) accompanying Bondy and his guitar, and the sessions have an air of gentle melancholy that brings out their graceful balance of blues and country accents; the minimal backing emphasizes the late-night vibe of the music, and the deep lonesome wanderings of the melodies are an ideal match for the downbeat storytelling of "On the Moon," "Oh the Vampyre," and "The Coal Hits the Fire." Bruce Watson's production is subtle and nonintrusive, and that works beautifully in favor of the songs, which clearly play best without excess gingerbread and with Bondy's voice and lyrics placed front and center. When the Devil's Loose might share some reference points with another singer/songwriter with a similar offhand affection for roots music, but A.A. Bondy seems to be developing a voice of his own despite all the surface similarities, and the result is a quietly powerful album of songs that cut deeper into the heart and soul than you might expect at first glance. -- AMG

The Apples In Stereo: #1 Hits Explosion (2009)

mp3 VBR~224kpbs | 89MB | 52:37 min.
Quote:
If the Apples in Stereo had only made Fun Trick Noisemaker and then quit, their legacy as a legendary pop group would have been secure. In 1995, nobody else was making records as giddy or as full of wonder as the Apples, and definitely no one was making records as exquisitely arranged and magical on a shoestring budget. The release of Fun Trick was a defining moment in indie rock that came pretty close to being a lo-fi pop masterpiece, and still sounds just as amazing. That the Apples couldn't top it is no cause for shame on their part; that they kept trying and ended up creating a catalog as rich in great songs and records is cause for celebration. The cheekily titled #1 Hits Explosion is just the kind of career-summing package the band deserves and it makes clear just how wonderful a band it is. Gathering songs in roughly equal numbers from all six of their studio albums (and adding the infectious rocker "Signal in the Sky [Let's Go]" that they recorded for The Powerpuff Girls' Heroes & Villains soundtrack), the collection focuses mostly on the ultra-hooky, power pop-influenced side of the band. Starting with the booming rocker "Energy" from their most recent record, New Magnetic Wonder, the songs fly past like gooey sticks of bubblegum, glowing and shimmering like the finest pop music of the '60s and '70s. "The Rainbow," "Go," "Shine a Light," and "Ruby" (just to pick four) could have easily been hits in 1967 given the right circumstances, "Shine a Light" sounds like a low-budget ELO, and there's absolutely no reason "Signal in the Sky" wasn't topping the charts in 2000. Only "Strawberry Fire" and "20 Cases Suggestive Of..." hint at the trippy, hazily psychedelic side of the group, but even then the hooks in the choruses are strong enough that you could hang a cement overcoat from them with no problem. The possible flaw with the collection is that -- as is the case with any such album -- one of your favorite tracks might be missing ("Glowworm" from Fun Trick, for example). Otherwise, it works as both an excellent overview of the band's career and as a document of some of the finest pop music of the alt-rock era (and maybe of ever). --

Dirtmusic - Dirtmusic (2008)

mp3 256kpbs | 106MB | 56:58 min.

Quote:
Chris Eckman vocalist and guitarist (The Walkabouts) Hugo Race (formerly Birthday Party and Bad Seeds) now guitarist with True Spirit and former Come and Codeine member Chris Brokaw have made an album that contains what it says on the CD packshot - Dirtmusic. It's not the happiest of CDs to embrace, nevertheless, there is an undisputable charm to it.

This unique collaboration has brought together three musicians who have a full grasp of the barren dust bowls of America and know exactly how to paint the landscape in musical terms, perfectly captured on opening instrumental Erica Moody. Alt-folkie Micah P. Hinson got me fascinated by his take on his sparse alternative Americana, and though this has occasional similar soundscapes, it's a bit more down the line and accessible, which ain't too bad a thing. Together they've created a well crafted album with some delicious melodies and harmonies and exquisite instrumentation that sucks you instantly into some far-off distant wilderness, which is quite remarkable, considering it was all laid down and recorded in Prague, of all places. After a quick," Ready, one, two, three," the lightweight Erica Moody is a great and appropriate start. It sets the scene so to speak, with its steady and laid-back template that spills over onto The Other Side, with banjo plucking nicely to what sounds like a tambourine before a sweet (and catchy) chorus kicks in. Sun City Casino has a slow and menacing pace textured by cool jangly reverbed guitars. It's the first song that you expect some kind of explosiveness or massive crescendo. It doesn't happen and it's not a disappointment really, as we are (don't forget) out somewhere remote, in their collective minds. Then comes sweeping Face Of Evil, a rootsy acoustic ballad, where the guitar sounds almost over accentuated thrusting it to the foreground of their picture, further enhanced by twanging electric guitar. Brooding chugger with husky vocals, Still Running is a haunting boogie and the paceiest song so far, though further in Ballad Of A Dream is a cracking soft country shuffle which has some spell-binding wailing solo breaks. Wasted On couldn't get more laid-back if it tried. It plods at snail pace punctuated by thudding drums with rolling organ in the distance, even building into a kind of retarded crescendo. Finally, it drifts into the dusty distance in typical, if not somewhat jagged fashion, with Morning Dew.

02 — The Other Side (05:37)
03 — Sun City Casino (05:30)

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic (2009)

Quote:
Embryonic is the title of the upcoming twelfth studio album by Oklahoma experimental rock band The Flaming Lips set to be released on October 13, 2009. It will be the first double album to be released by the band, announced during an interview with the band's frontman Wayne Coyne,

Somewhere along the way it occurred to me that we should do a double album... Just this idea that you can weave a couple of themes into there and you can sprawl a little bit,

As of May 2009, the album is being recorded at multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd's vacant house.

MGMT contributed to one song, and Karen O on more than one.

The style of these tracks will be different from the previous albums, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and At War with the Mystics, and has been reported to be similar to the style of Joy Division, a Miles Davis group, and John Lennon.

Wayne Coyne says the new record solves their perpetual "dilemma" of what to include on each album, by dumping all their ideas on the follow-up to 2006's At War with the Mystics. Coyne had this to say about the double-LP decision to Billboard: "Some of my favorite records – thinking Beatles' White Album, Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and even some of the longer things that The Clash have done – part of the reason I like them is that they're not focused. They're kind of like a free-for-all and go everywhere. It's not necessarily because we're prolific, I think we always stay in a sort of perpetual panic of like we never have more songs than we need and we always wonder if any of them are any good to begin with." Coyne notes that Embryonic is less polished than Mystics or 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and has a "freak-out vibe". The frontman also notes the influence of Miles Davis's group and slow-burn songs like John Lennon's "Instant Karma!". --

Richard Hawley - Truelove's Gutter (2009)

Quote:
Truelove's Gutter is the sixth studio album from musician Richard Hawley, set for release on September 21, 2009. The album features some uncommon instrumentation, such as the waterphone, megabass, and cristal baschet. Thematically, Truelove's Gutter is Richard's darkest album to date. Richard told the BBC that the album was inspired by particularly dark periods in his life and those of others.

Quote:
With "forces' sweetheart" Vera Lynn at the top of the album chart, the time couldn't be more ripe for Richard Hawley to seduce a mainstream audience. His sixth album, like its predecessors, comes drenched in nostalgia: the cover portrait is styled after Roy Orbison; Open Up Your Door ends with a melody quoted from Strangers in the Night; there's even a song about hand-writing a love letter by firelight - who does that any more? Opening track As the Dawn Breaks might have been sung by Lynn herself, its mentions of "hope hung on every washing line" and "a songbird's melody" are so evocative of that era. Elsewhere, ghostly cries from the musical saw and ondes Martenot bring an element of eeriness and adventure - yet it's hard to escape a niggling feeling that Hawley is here polishing a formula, even falling back on cliche, in his continuing quest to make the local and homely sound lushly romantic.

01. As The Dawn Breaks 4:36
02. Open Up Your Door 4:43
03. Ashes On The Fire 4:25

06. Soldier On 6:51
07. For Your Lover Give Some Time 5:38
08. Don't You Cry 10:42

Echo & The Bunnymen - The Fountain (2009)

mp3 VBR v0
Quote:
The Fountain is the forthcoming eleventh studio album by British band Echo & the Bunnymen. The album is being produced by John McLaughlin, and Coldplay singer Chris Martin has collaborated with the band on one of the album's tracks. The Fountain is due to be released on 12 October 2009.
Reviewing The Fountain for the British music magazine Mojo, Johnny Sharp described the album as "mid-tempo, middle of the road, middle-aged pop-rock". Sharp went on to say that the only character was to be found in the "pun-laden lyrics" of "Shroud of Turin". In The Guardian, Dave Simpson gave the album four stars. He described the album as, "Their most accessible offering in a long time sees Ian McCulloch at his most lyrically playful and cocksure, hovering between confessional [...] and mischievous, and firing off one-liners as if it were the band's 80s heyday. Will Sergeant's guitar-playing is at its scintillating best [...] Their poppiest tunes since Bring On the Dancing Horses could win the Scouse veterans a new generation of fans." Writing in the music magazine Q, Garry Mulholland described lead singer, Ian McCulloch, and guitarist, Will Sergeant's, sound as "remarkably perky" and "rejuvenated by an injection of youth from new rhythm section Simon Perry and David Thomas and pop producer John McLaughlin. <Wikipedia>

Thomas Function - In The Valley Of Sickness (2009)

mp3 VBR V0~270kpbs | 70MB | 38:25 min.
Quote:
Thomas Function is the ever-advancing pursuit of impossible satisfaction. Emerging from Alabama in 2007 with two singles, they've since released four more singles and the highly praised LP "Celebration" with Bomp! Imprint Alive. They've played countless shows in venues ranging from some dude's bathroom to the Metro in Chicago and onward to some dude's kitchen in Sweden. Endless touring and now: "In The Valley Of Sickness".

Thomas Function love punk rock, but they love country, blues, new wave, garage rock, and the shit happening up the street, too. It comes out sounding like a bunch of earnest, severe songs from the foothills of Huntsville, Alabama, full of anger, clarity, and bourbon. [Fat Possum]
