Beihdja Rahal was born in Algiers and grew up in a family that regularly performed the music of Moorish spain. Having been introduced to the mysteries of the art at a very young age, she went on the study with the great masters of such classical music, who included Abderrezak Fakharji, Mohamed Khaznaji et Zubir Karkachi. In 1982 she joined the Fakharjia association and became one of its principal soloists. In 1986 she was one of the founder members of Essundussia Music association, where she taught music until 1992. In september 1992 Beihdja Rahal moved to France, where she decided to devote herself entirely to her artistic career. Two years later she formed her ensemble, preferring a chamber group which is more suitable for improvisation.

This is a prominent and engaging attempt to reconstruct the Andalusí-Magrebi music of the Arabic era in Spain. Of course, beyond its intrinsic musical merits, this is an illustrative repertory with interesting implications for the later Spanish & Provençal repertory.
Although any statements with respect to the "authenticity" of this program may be somewhat dubious, there is actually a huge volume of medieval literature on the subject, led by none other than Abú Bakr Ibn Yahya al-Sâyigh (Zaragoza 1070 - Fez 1138) or "Ibn Báya" of the present ensemble. Fortunately for any project of this sort, medieval Spain was one of the most literary socities around. Beyond the extensive theory, the andalusí lute of the period has been reconstructed from preserved carvings.
Naturally, the most similar music is the contemporary Núba (or "modal suite") music of Morocco. However, the present reconstruction offers some styles and techniques which seem more evocative of other musical approaches of the Islamic world, including that of contemporary Iran (considered by many to be the "least changed" over the years). What is most striking here is that there is no derivative character. The music proceeds in a unified way, with no creeping doubts. It is very confidently laid out, and although not as florid as most contemporary repertories, solidly expressive. In that sense, while any remarks on "authenticity" would be dubious, this reconstruction is believable as a real musical system.

This album was recorded live at a concert originally conceived as a dialogue between two major Moroccan singers in the form of mawwal, vocal improvisation based on classical poetry. Vocalists Mohamed Bajeddoub and Abderrahim Souiri give outstanding solo and duo performances, based on excerpts from some of the most beautiful Arab poems on the theme of courtly and mystical love.

Songlines magazine, June 2008 issue (#52)
The bewitching Deus et Diabolus (God and the Devil) threads together the voices of three women: Mara Aranda, from Valencia's L'Ham de Foc; Sigrid Hausen, from Munich's medieval music group Estampie; and Iman al Kandoussi. They are accompanied by a lively ensemble of flutes, qanun, ud, saz, rabab, fiddle, nyckelharpa, hurdy-gurdy, pandera tambourines and percussion. It's an inspiring encounter between the talented musicians of L'Ham de Foc and Estampie recorded in the old Cartuja Monastery, Cazalla de la Sierra, Seville. This is sprightly music, fusing Mediterranean, Oriental and medieval moods. The ethos underpinning their reinterpretations of Arab, Jewish and Christian cantigas to the Virgin Mary, their reimaginings of sensual dances and Arabic songs, is expressed by a line from poet Ibn al-Arabi, `Wherever the caravan may bend its steps/Love is my religion'.
While each exquisite piece speaks for itself, they flow together like a song cycle embedded in a utopian view of the past as one of dialogue and peaceful co-existence between religious cultures. The 13th-century `Cantiga de Santa María' is just one breathtaking moment, transporting in the way the timbres and textures of voices and instruments interweave. The arrangements for each of the 12 songs are stunningly varied, each `voice' jewel like, distinctly within the fabric of pieces.
Frustratingly, the attractive booklet (in German, Spanish and English) offering general background and interspersing songs texts in Arabic and old Spanish, with seductive photos of the three women and Seville's Arabic Baths, fails to include the vivid `story' detail that would help reference the individual songs that capture attention. Still, it's a brilliant disc nonetheless.

Omar Sarmini is a Syrian singer. He is regarded as an icon of the Arab town vocal art and author of a vast musical spiritual repertory.
Born in Aleppo in 1962, he grew up in religious circles and attended the rituals of the dhikr from a very early age, presided over by his father, the Shaykh Muhammad Sarmini. Thus the father was able to guide the son by inculcating in him the most essential elements of the sacred repertory. Omar Sarmini then continued his musical education with the city's Arab Youth Club. So, like every self-respecting singer, his education has included an obligatory passage via the sacred repertory of Islam. He is currently one of the rising stars on the musical scene in Syria.

Malhun (or Milhûn, in Arabic الملحون) meaning the melodic poem is a Moroccan music that borrows its modes from the Andalusian music. It is a kind of urban, sung poetry that comes from the exclusively masculine working-class milieu of craftsmen's guilds.
Origins
The melhun, originally a pure literary creation, emerged as a poetic art today known in Morocco under the name of qassida (meaning poem) (in Arabic القصيدة) or zajal (in Arabic الزجل). Combined with music, it quickly spread across the country where it acquired fame particularly among artisans.
Music
The qassida (laqsida in Moroccan dialect) of the melhun is based on two essential elements: the overtures preceding it and the parts of which it is composed. aqsâm (in Arabic الاقسام) verses sung solo interrupted by the harba refrain (meaning launch) (in Arabic الحربة). Harba, the origin of which goes back to the 16th century, is a refrain taken up between the verses by the sheddâda (group of singers and instrumentalist-singers)(in Arabic الشداشة). Another refrain called dridka in Arabic الدريدكة) is a simplified form of the harba, taking off from an accelerated rhythm to announce the end of a qassida
The qassida however preserved the division of the text in stanzas as in the Andalusian song: the verse (ghson meaning branch) can include from eight to sixteen verses, a short refrain or harba offers an alternation which makes it possible to break the monotony of the musical discourse of the Melhoun song. This gave rise to the sûruf, subsidiary procedures employed by singers to produce an even greater effect on the audience and above all to correct the rythm. Al-Maghrawi (16th 17th centuries) created from dân, a word that has no meaning, verses which were used as the basis for versewriting by Moroccan folk poets.

Beihja Rahal comes from a middle artistic, but it is the only one to have made a career in music, a genre in particularly difficult and selective: Andalusian singing. In fact, the practice of this art requires both a great dexterity to handle the instrument-one it has chosen, kouitra, a former Algerian typically, is especially difficult to control and a voice-perfect. She continued her musical education with the great masters of the Arab-Classicism: The best known were Abderrezak Fakhardji, Mohamed Khaznadji and Zoubir Karkachi.
Bahja Rahal, who now 40 years old, singing since the age of 12 years. Recognizing dominate an art where very few women excellent, it decided a decade ago to make a career.
The singer has completed a painstaking work, that to embark on the registration of twelve noubas remaining Andalusian heritage. Through this initiative for several reasons, she also wanted to prove that the female voice has emerged. A bet, a priori, succeeded because thanks to his professionalism and his determination, it remains today the singer Andalusian the most listened and most appreciated. It is surrounded by some musicologists and seasoned musicians for the recording of his nine noubas. This pure happiness for two hours was obtained Beihdja Rahal to his fans is only part remission since, in a few months, it will present the tenth nouba Raml Maya.
In his concerts, at the earliest musical notes, the spirits escape in enjoying this beautiful music millennium. With his voice caressing and refined Beihdja Rahal made praises to the Creator and his prophets with emotion. Side orchestra, it abandoned the crowded orchestras in vogue in recent years and returned to training room that leave room for improvisation.
