OREMI was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best World Music Album.

Singer and songwriter Angelique Kidjo has her feet planted in many worlds on OREMI, and it sounds fantastic. A cosmopolitan hailing from Benin, West Africa, Angelique maneuvers gracefully and transcendently across the African Diaspora and back. Her studio assemblage here is a fine one, in that they help her thread tight seams between "urban" sounds, funk, jazz and the pop of her home region, leading to an outstanding production that sounds as organic as it is diverse.

"Itche Koutche" is robust street-funk that features special guest Branford Marsalis on soprano sax, blowing a lovely batch of sonic bubbles. "Babalao" does more of the same but with a decidedly Deep Forest feel. Jazz chanteuse Cassandra Wilson adds honey to the sage and mellow "Never Know." While no rendition of Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" may ever rip as ferociously as the original, Kidjo's layered vocal overdubs, jumbo-sized bass lines and down-tempo treatment give it loads of attitude and shine all the same. As she coasts back and forth between her native tongue and English, Kidjo dispenses West African proverbial wisdom in a form both resonant and intensely hip, giving OREMI wide appeal.

Sierra Leone - Musiques Traditionelles
Ocora C 580036, 1996

1. Chant de louange avec petit luth et choeur de voix à bouche fermée
2. Chant de louanges avec guitare et voix (Femme)
3. Solo de flûte foula
4. Tambours temné (Société insourou)
5. Chanteur de louanges avec harpe en calebasse
6. Filles mandingo, hymne chrétien
7. Xylophones karanko
8. Tambours limba
9. Femmes mendé, (Société boundou)

Recorded 1976/77

Quote:
The traditions of the Fula griots and the Mende, Themne, Limba and Karanko drums, compose the present musical panorama.

Quote:
The first track is 10 minutes of a man singing, occasionally joined by another male singer, over a drone of repeated chords on an instrument that sounds much like a ukelele. The second track consists of a woman singing a somewhat more interesting line over an equally repetitious accompaniment played by what the notes identify as three guitars; but whose most notable characteristic for European trained ears is their non-Western standard tuning and tone color--rather restricted in upper overtones (dull) by our standards. The third track is a nine minute solo on a three holed flute; the construction of the piece results from the immediate repetition several times in succession of very small fragments--4, 5, or 6 note fragments. Track 4 is a village chant/dance, with drums, rattles and cowbells in a style that may well be familiar to anyone who has had a slight exposure to 'traditional African village music'. Track 5 is rather similar in nature, but with lutes, and not the best recording quality. Track 6 is a Christian Hymn sung by two schoolgirls. Track 7 is a xylophone and chant track; track 8 more chanting with drums and cowbells, very repetitious; track 8 is women singing with a rattle.
There is a nice variety of instruments and styles; but not one track stands out as particularly fascinating. The collection demonstrates how different African and European music and aesthetics are; jazz, blues, and the like notwithstanding. For someone looking in particular for examples of music from Sierra Leone, of course this will do; but for someone in search of something really special and unique I doubt they will be satisfied with this particular CD.

Quote:

Quote:
Powerful rhythms and exotic melodies performed on balafon, flute and kora - this is the recipe for the music of Farafina, a music that fascinates an audience around the globe.
When it comes to recording new songs, it seems that almost all Stars from the African music scene do only trust Western studios with their sophisticated technique. Farafina has chosen another way. Their producers brought all the equipment to Bobo-Dioulasso, capturing a fresh recording that breathes and lives. A breeze of warm air and the smell of tea and traditional rice dishes was more typical to the recordings than the clean atmosphere of laboratory. The most outstanding feat of Farafina is certainly their ability to expand their music without denying their traditional instruments. So, while integrating orchestral forms and new melodies, the balafons, koras, flute, djembes, tama, and baras are still there. Of course new timbres have been brought by guitar and keyboard, and not in the last by the griotte Fatoumata Dembele, a female voice adding a fresh colour to this up till now male only ensemble.

Davi Moraes - guitar
Pee-Wee Ellis - saxophone
Erick Firmino - bass guitar
Etienne Mbappe - bass guitar
Samba N'Dokh - talking drum
Thio M'Baye - percussion

Quote:
Nearly every artist in Senegal has to wrestle with the long shadow cast by the mighty Youssou N'Dour. A former N'Dour protege, Cheikh Lo is one who has staked his own claim. With a deep but still sweetly melodious and sometimes hoarse voice that is the opposite of the keening N'Dour's, Lo takes a foundation of Mbalax--an uptempo Senegalese style that mixes pop, African and Caribbean styles together in varying degrees--and adds even more. Here, on his first album in six years, a drum troop from the Brazilian state of Bahia fills out some tunes and James Brown saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis is brought in to add some peppy soul music-inflected horn parts to others. The intersection of ideas, styles, and cultures is far from smooth, but the kinetic energy created by all the influences brings a festive vibrancy to the music. Highlights include the undulating "N'Galula," the smooth ballad "Sante Yalla," and the chattering "Senegal/Bresil." --Tad Hendrickson

Quote:
Senegalese musical maverick Cheikh Lo's third album for World Circuit/Nonesuch, Lamp Fall, has a distinctively contemporary feel, incorporating different styles and influences while retaining the deep spirituality that is essential to Lo. Lamp Fall is undeniably upbeat, celebratory album, that weaves together a myriad of colors and textures.

Gordon Odametey
Power to the Soul

Gamton Records CD GAM 003, 2000

10. Aseriso 7'26
11. Nana 2'44
12. Ogidi Gidi 4'28
13. Wala Aba 5'01

Quote:
Also from Gamton but a different order of thing entirely, Gordon Odametey's album just exploded out of my speakers like several simultaneous earthquakes, frightening the dog and me out of our skin. I have to say that the title track - violent, visceral and explosive - is one of the most thrilling demonstrations of percussion I've heard. And so it proceeds - it's rare for a drumming album to approach the spiritual, and anyone who's ever tried to assemble a band knows the difficulty of finding a drummer who also understands music. But this prodigious Ghanaian ( based in Berlin for 15 Years ) provides a glowing lesson of what can be achieved by holdness, intuition and good hands. At times, the effects are thunderous, other times more conversational. But always I think the riffs and rhythms derive directly from spoken phrase and sentence, the mind leading the hand. Rattling beads, a backdrop of human voices, barking dogs, and didgeridoo - this is a beautifully recorded aural canvas that just might do your head in. - Rick Sanders

Quote:
With his second album "Power To The Soul" Gordon Odametey summarizes his experience as a drummer and presents an artistically well balanced result of 20 years of drumming. The 'classical' use of traditional patterns of rhythm is accentuated, however, the musician' s preference for free drumming is easily to be recognized. Gordon Odametey has been living in Germany for 15 years.
He comes from a Ghanian family of musicians and healers and combines experiences made in the diaspora with those of the origins of drumming. In addition to the aesthaetic effect of sounds "Power To The Soul" deals with the power inherent in music: the freeing of emotions and being aware of them. Gordon Odametey works with the music's effects on the soul and feelings of his audience. His music translates and causes emotions: "You feel that you are being cured ... in a way that you cannot describe and you feel happiness ... , an overwhelming joy of life."

Comments:
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is one of those acts that everyone should go and see. The sweet South African harmonies of this band, which was brought to these shores thanks mainly to Paul Simon's Graceland record, are still as strong as ever. Having worked with everyone from Dolly Parton to Eric Clapton, the ten member group, led by founder Joseph Shabalala, has released a new album but under rather tragic circumstances. While on tour in 2002, Shabalala's wife Nellie was murdered by a masked gunman outside a church in South Africa. There are still no leads and no suspects. So after enduring hardships through apartheid, this is possibly the hardest album for the group. But it is also one of their best.
Shabalala's vocal starts off the title track, which slowly gives way to the group's a cappella greatness. From the rolling of the tongues to the give and take Shabalala leads the other nine through, the sound is a bit somber but there is a hopeful spirit in it. The melody near the halfway point is another plus. It's a good introduction into the rest of the record. "Uqinisil' Ubada (Lord Is the Light and Truth)" is more upbeat and up-tempo, despite still being void of any instruments aside from voice. Shabalala starts the refrain that is the foundation of the song and then proceeds to sing over and at times under the rich tenor and bass harmony.

Quote:
In the rich, varied and bizarre history of African music, the tragedy of the Ethiopian pop recording industry stands alone. But for the past few years, Buda Records has brought us the Ethiopiques series, showcasing the immense scope of the golden age of Ethiopian music – lovingly assembled, remastered and fully annotated. An outstanding pianist and a remarkable composer, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guébrou (now a Christian nun in a Jerusalem monastery) once recorded her own piano solo works, steeped in Ethiopian culture. The rich, personal poetry of these songs brings to mind Claude Debussy or Carlos d'Alessio's "India Song" – a rare curiosity indeed, with beautiful melodies and a charming interpretation.

Quote:
Having exposed the goldmine of pre-Mengistu Swinging Addis and tentatively explored traditional instrumental and vocal music, Francis Falceto's incomparable Ethiopiques series keeps rolling with one of its strangest volumes yet. Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou was a daughter of privilege, and as such was sent abroad to Europe in the 1930s for a Western education. Her schooling included music, and she became a pianist, eventually moving to Jerusalem and recording highly unique pieces that filter the traditional Ethiopian pentatonic scale through classical technique-- in the end sounding like impressionistic jazz.

Quote:
I thought I had heard every tale told about the love of music. This is as interesting a story as it is unusual.
Move over Mulatu Astatke and Girma Yifrashewa. Wake up the echoes of Prof Ashenafi Kebede. There is an old but new, no, not a sheriff, but a nun in town. Yes, you read right, a nun. This is the story of Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou, a musical genius. Her talent has been compared to Jazz and classical greats like, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, and Jelly Roll Morton, and even Eric Satie as well as Beethoven in some of her works.
I guess genius comes in many shapes and forms. This unheralded musical talent, however, has such an interesting tale, it almost makes her musical talent the side story. I accidentally stumbled into her CD last weekend at a store and decided to do a little research on her, as I sometimes do before purchasing the CD. The short bio I found was absolutely amazing. Here are a few excerpts.
The latest installment in the Ethiopiques series is a brilliant, gorgeous and captivating record: solo piano compositions from Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou, whose warm, gentle touch evokes everyone from the work of Debussy to Fats Waller to Bill Evans. Born in 1923 into a learned Ethiopian family, Guebrou was educated in Switzerland (where she first learned piano) and Cairo as well as in her native country. - Soundfix
Meditations on bible themes and the beauties of nature were her favorite subjects and her compositions were often built around recognizably Ethiopian melodic structures. But they also reveal refracted shards of what would certainly be cited as influences if only it could be established she had ever heard the works of Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, Abdullah Ibrahim and especially, Eric Satie. But ultimately, Sister GuÈbrou seems to be a lone reed -- but a very beautiful one. - Christina Roden
The 21st volume in the grand Ethiopiques series (not bad for a country that has no musical tradition of its own to speak of) is dedicated to the solo piano works of the outstanding composer and performer Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou , a daughter of Ethiopian high society who chucked it all to become a nun in the nation's Orthodox Church. Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou was educated in Europe. She played violin (under the tutelage of Polish émigré Alexander Kontorowicz ). She took up her piano studies while in the convent and teaching at an orphanage. - Thom Jurek
"Not bad for a country that has no musical tradition of its own..."? Well, somebody done told you wrong, Mr Jukrek. I think you need to do some homework about Ethiopian music. But that will be adressed at a later date on this blog. For now, your kind review serves our purpose.
