Biography:
A driving force behind the neo-klezmer movement since its inception in the early 1980s, Andy Statman, newly signed to Sony Classical, remains an extraordinary paradox: a musician devoted to musical tradition who also continues to break new artistic ground. A celebrated mandolin player in the "Newgrass" movement of the 1970s, Andy Statman (clarinettist/composer/bandleader) has recently reinvigorated yet another realm of traditional musicmaking - klezmer - with his own particular blend of virtuosity, and originality.
The Hidden Light (SK 60814), Andy Statman's first release on Sony Classical, draws upon his commitment to traditional repertoire as well as his singular capacity as a composer in the klezmer revival style.
Fronting a quartet that features such jazz luminaries as pianist Bruce Barth, drummer Bob Weiner and bassist Scott Lee, Statman leads the listener into equal measures of traditional and new music. This recording marks a new direction for Statman, in that it combines the spiritual depth of klezmer ¬ captured here in the niggunim, melodies from the mystical Chassidim of Judaism ¬ with the improvisational qualities of jazz.
A founding member of the Newgrass collective "Country Cookin'" in the early seventies, he marked his turn to klezmer with three recordings by the Andy Statman Klezmer Orchestra. Subsequent releases included a collection of traditional Jewish songs with mandolin - great David Grisman and another collection of klezmer recordings with Itzhak Perlman.
Acknowledged among the most authoritative of klezmer revivalists, Andy Statman was the pupil of master clarinettist Dave Tarras, who bequeathed his instruments to Statman when he died.

André Taïeb lives in France and sings at the Montpellier synagogue. This is a beautiful example of piyyutim (liturgical poems in Hebrew), which were first developed in Palestine and Babylonia. In the 10th century, Andalusian Spain became the greatest productive center of piyyut. After the expulsion of Jews from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition of 1492, piyyutim spread from Yemen to Tunisia and from Morocco to Aleppo, Syria.

Oi Va Voi are a British band that takes its name from a Yiddish-derived exclamation popular in modern Hebrew meaning, approximately "Oh, dear!". It is an experimental band from London, England, which formed in the late 1990s. Their sound draws on Jewish music from both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, including both klezmer and Ladino music, as well as Eastern European, especially Hungarian folk music, as well as contemporary electronic music.

Oi Va Voi makes music that may owe as much, or more, to current electronica and trance dance beats as to traditional Jewish music. The result is a refreshing, danceable - how could the hip hop wedding of klezmer and electronica be anything else?

Klezmer is the vivacious Jewish music, played traditionally at weddings and other celebrations. In the 1980s, new klezmer groups including The Klezmatics and Brave Old World wanted more than just to revive the traditions of the past but to once again create a "living tradition". They began to incorporate various styles, such as rock and roll, jazz, and even Latin music with age-old Jewish folk traditions. The Rough Guide To Klezmer Revival is a tribute to this remarkable resurgence, and features the giants of this ever-thriving musical tradition.

Klezmatics mix jazz, folk, rock and Jewish music into a unique and powerful new sound. This album is one of the more challeging of their many works, leaping from genre to genre with seeming abandon. A core element of the record is the songwriting of playwright Tony Kushner, a self-described "half-baked, half-former, re-formed, dummermann kind of Jew." His lyrics for "Undoing World" are powerful phrases of love, loss and exile played against a traditional tune. Klezmatics can break into a frenzied dance here or a heart-rending fiddle tune there; the beauty of Possessed is its complete unpredictability. This is klezmer music of a high order.

Back in 1993 I saw an odd album by a previously-unknown-to-me Hungarian band called Muzsikás. Titled, "the Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania," it seemed likely to be, at worst, a different folky take on old Yiddish songs. Instead, it was my introduction to one of the most wonderful folk bands anywhere, and to the ethereal voice of Marta Sebestyén (whose own recordings are never so good as when she records with this band).
Even then, the melodies seemed more Hungarian than Jewish, but this is not a bad thing. Good Hungarian folk--and Muzsikás play it better than anyone--is an aural delight. The sawing fiddles and complex time signatures are intensely moving. The irony, however, is that the inflections are not Jewish. The difference is so great that during a discussion of "tradition as avant garde" on the jewish-music discussion list, someone put forward this album as a truly avant garde sound. I guess it is, in its way, as it isn't based on Jewish ways of playing, only Jewish notes.
Upon my arrival in Eastern Europe back in 1996 everyone hastened to explain to me how traditional Jewish music in that area was played Jewishly--not like that band Muzsikás did. It was further explained to me that they had simply gotten bad advice when they recorded. They should have spoken, with, say, Bob Cohen, formerly of the Budapester Klezmer Band, now of Di Naye Kapelye, in Budapest.
For all that, you can still hear the same core melody as on the Yiddish Theatre song, "Belz," as the band does "Jewish Dance from Szászrégen, and the "Jewish Csárdás" are a wonderful introduction to the Romanian tradition most akin to American bluegrass. Klezmatics fans will also hear an instrumental covered on a recent album of that radical roots klezmer band, here played as "Haneros Halelu".
This is a beautiful album. On their way to recover one thing, the band has created something different, yet wondrous, instead. Compounding the ironies, it is also one of the weakest of Muzsikás albums. So be it. It is also good that the band has rescued this repertoire. And, it is worth noting that the band continues to perform this music as they know it, and that it continues to sound beautiful and moving in concert. There is something magic in hearing Sebestyén introduce a Havdalah song as one of her favorite all-time melodies.

Municipale Balcanica was founded in 2003 and, after substantial live activity, released their debut album “Fòua” in 2005 on the Italian Ethnoworld label. On their debut Municipale Balcanica mix Tzigane, Yiddish Klezmer and Eastern European sounds and the most radical and warm music from their homeland, Puglia, in southern Italy. The cd soon draws international attention. The prestigious journal International Folk World, assessed Municipale Balcanica’s ‘Hava Nagila’ as “one of the best interpretations heard among thousands of the last three decades.”
The approach to the ancient melodies is original and distinctive, because each musician has a very personal musical background. The entire brass section of Municipale Balcanica, for example, started its musical experience in the traditional marching band from the town of origin, which is why its expression is so powerful and vivid in the traditional Europeans tunes, and why it explodes in exciting solos included in the new arrangements. Similarly, the rhythm section gives new strength to the tracks, supporting this involving and incisive way of playing old tunes. The result is SPAMisingly compact, and gives new expression and new meanings to these songs.
Special guest: Francesco Moneti: violin (Modena City Ramblers)

Spirit of the East is a collection of vocal works composed from 1998 to 2000 by the Israeli composer Piris Eliyahu. Born in Daghestan, Eliyahu has been active in Israel in a variety of frameworks, teaching and performing the classical music of the East since he immigrated to Israel in 1989. The compositions on this CD reflect the influence of several eastern musical cultures, in particular classical Persian music, Azeri and Turkish music. His compositions combine elements from these traditions, especially the use of the modal system (makam) and rhythmic cycles (usul), metered compositions in fixed forms, a preference for unison textures, mixture of eastern and western instruments and spaces for improvisation by the performers. This fascinating combination of traditions results in this Israeli composer's unique style.
Eliyahu's sensitive vocal composition demands virtuoso performers. The composer created the compositions on this CD for the voices of outstanding vocalists from the East, such as Alim Qasimov and his daughter Ferghana, as well as for Israeli specialists in the eastern tradition such as Esti Kenan Ofri. Numerous instrumental soloists are featured in the performances of the compositions included in this CD. Most of these musicians are new immigrants from the former Soviet Union. These instrumentalists have worked together with Piris Eliyahu over the years in several ensembles. One of these groups, the DŠm Ensemble, is sponsored by the Confederation House as one of its house ensembles. Its establishment is part of the Confederation House's project aimed at encouraging and preserving the Jewish musical traditions of Central Asia in Israel. The recent musical compositions by Eliyahu are an original contribution and a landmark in modern Israeli music. They synthesize a variety of closely related eastern musical sources, made possible in part by the composer's familiarity with them, as well as his access to some of the finest native performers from Central Asia who until now were unavailable to Israeli composers.
