Background information:
The time the music on 'Lute Music for Witches and Alchemists' was written was one of mysticism and wonder. The era of alchemists and witches tapped into the dark recesses of human understanding, during a time before scientific inquiry and rationalism. The dances, preludes and fantasias on this recording were intended to appeal to this older sensibility more than a rational or analytical one.
Lutz Kirchhof plays lute, vihuela and theorbo on this eclectic program of music from the renaissance and baroque. Each section of the recording is comprised of music inspired by witches with powers to heal and alchemists who quested for hidden knowledge. Kirchhof's choice of repertoire is eclectic. He plays Anthony Holborne's "The Fairy Round" with a jaunty swagger that's irresistible. The "Tarantella" by Athanasius Kircher is equally colorful, it's a musical remedy against the venomous bite of the tarantula. Kirchhof also plays with melancholy eloquence on the gentle "Fantasia" by Luys de Milan. The lutenist also displays some exuberant flair in Nicolas Vallet's "Battaille." This is a fascinating recording that resurrects some treasures from the lute repertoire framed in a clever programming concept.
The delicate lute tone charmed 16th- and 17th-century listeners by its simple acoustic beauty. The gentle plucked notes could affect the mood, altering one's emotional state. Kirchhof suggests that such potential made music invaluable to witches and alchemists, who were held in high regard in the irrational centuries before the Age of Enlightenment. This theory enables Kirchhof to make an eclectic selection of 30 short pieces covering 200 years and four different lutes--renaissance lute, vihuela, baroque lute, and theorbo. He does not claim that any of the items were actually put to any alchemical or satanic use, but he does not need to. The Presto and Galanterie by S. L. Weiss speak for themselves. Dufaut's Suite in A minor might not otherwise have reached the public; Hagen's Sonata in C minor would have remained obscure; and Holborne's The Fairy Round Galliard waited in vain for the revival of alchemy as a science. An eccentric disc all-round. - Rick Jones

Background information:
Who doesn't love a lullaby? As a tribute "to all mothers and children", singer Montserrat Figueras offers this unusual program of 18 such songs from diverse sources and anonymous composers--Portuguese, English, Greek, Catalan, Hebrew, Sephardic, and North African--as well as pieces written by the likes of Byrd, Mussorgsky, Reger, Falla, Milhaud, and Pärt (two lullabies composed for this recording). Accompaniments show the stylish hand and always-tasteful imaginings of Jordi Savall and the instrumentalists of Hesperion XXI--viols, guitar, flutes, psaltery, harp--and, in three tracks, the piano of Paul Badura-Skoda. Although the liner notes prime us to expect very simple, repetitive tunes, Figueras transforms these ostensibly sleep-inducing songs into high, mind-and-ear-engaging art, embellishing, shaping, and imbuing them with deeply felt expression, sometimes wistful and at others fervent, but always delivered as if in intimate, personal touch with her listener(s).
And as diverse as the melodies (and languages) are, so does this repertoire give Figueras a chance to show her own considerable versatility, from the plaintive, chant-like José embala o menino (Portugal) to the extended, highly ornamented 16th century Sephardic ballad Nani, nani. Pärt's Berceuse de Noël (2002) is a gentle, sweetly rocking little song, ideally accompanied by viols, harp, psaltery, and santur; his Estonian cradle song, Kuus, kuus kallike, is as basic as it gets--an extremely simple, repetitive tune with a text of only three "words". For this last song--and for the Catalan lullaby Mareta, mareta no'm faces plorar--Figueras is joined by her daughter Arianna, an appropriate and beautiful match of voices. Mussorgsky's "With the doll" from his The Nursery and Milhaud's "Dors, dors" from his Hebrew songs--both accompanied by Badura-Skoda--are wonderful, rarely heard gems.
There are many other highlights here, and it's interesting to observe how Figueras adapts her voice and interpretive nuance to the different styles and texts. Of course, 77-plus minutes of these songs, all focused on one voice--a voice that to my ears has more edge and less warmth and softness than I'd prefer--can be a lot to take in at one sitting. But the beautiful songs and the first-rate presentation compel multiple listenings anyway, and the clear, detailed sound brings it up close but comfortably so, with natural, well-balanced instrumental timbres complementing the voices. --David Vernier, ClassicsToday.com

Just as Franz Liszt created new repertoire and technique for the piano by transcribing Symphonies and Operas and then developing new techniques with which to play them, Kazuhito Yamashita took a similar path in the early 1980's and so revolutionised the world of possibilities on the guitar.
By transcribing well known pieces of orchestral music for solo guitar he has encouraged a trend which could make classical guitar much more appealing and accessible to concert programmers and the general concert going audience.

Press Clipping
We are filled with joy by this magnificent disc, in which every piece offers a new SPAMise (one must admire the care taken in varying the expression from strophe to strophe), and in which the singers vie with one another in expressiveness and sincerity.
Le Monde de la Musique, 1999
Dialogos discovers new ways to bring these repertories to life: through a very unique composition of its members, with singers coming from different cultures and traditions, through preparing programmes in a form of an 'atelier' where the collective energy creates a constant plural unity which emphasizes the bond between singer and actor. Livljanic founded this ensemble of women in 1996. Their interpretation and execution are outstanding. Some of the pieces involve polyphony of a primitive sort, such as the genealogy from the beginning of St. Matthew's gospel.
Goldberg
In these pieces as well as the liturgical selections, Katarina Livljanić's ornamentation and rhythmic interpretation are extremely convincing. Her skills as both musicologist and performing artist combine to create a truly superior recording.
Liturgica
Thanks to the emotions which they are capable of arousing, the singers, luminous and full off complicity, help us to discover and love a musical heritage which emerges bit by bit from obscurity.

Background information:
The disc covers two centuries of music, providing a searching test for the soloist. The Bach Suite has had a strange history. It started life as a work for violin, and was then arranged for lute. Now in a modern adaptation is appears in an arrangement for guitar. The work has become one of the composer's best known, the Gavotte third movement being performed in many guises. The Sonata by Ponce was composed in 1929, and pays homage to the music of Franz Schubert. In four contrasting movements, it is engaging music of a lyrical nature, happy in general mood, but is in no way derivative of the famous composer.
The works by Tárrega are typically colourful Spanish scores, packed full of virtuosity and vivacity. They are late 19th century in general style, and would have been used by the composer to please his audience. The three works by Sulek would meet our expectations of a composer who looked musically backwards. Walton, on the other hand, wrote five short movements that bristle with technical difficulties, the score residing in the mainstream of the 20th century.
About the artist:
Ana Vidovic is an extraordinary talent of formidable gifts taking her place amongst the elite musicians of the world today. She has won an impressive number of prizes and international competitions all over the world. Those include first prizes in the Albert Augustine International Competition in Bath, England, the Fernando Sor competition in Rome, Italy and the Francisco Tarrega competition in Benicasim, Spain. Other top prizes include the Eurovision Competition for Young Artists, the Mauro Giuliani competition in Italy, the Printemps de la Guitare in Belgium and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York.
Equally impressive is the fact that she has already recorded five CDs, one of them for the Naxos label, and that she has already concertized in some twenty countries throughout the world. She has performed in cities such as London, Paris, Vienna, Salzburg, Rome, Budapest, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Oslo, Copenhagen, Toronto, Baltimore, San Francisco, Houston, Austin, Dallas and St.Louis.
In her native Croatia she has performed with the Zagreb Soloists and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and with Symphony Orchestra of the Croatian Radio and Television,as well as having been featured in three television documentaries by the eminent Croatian film director Petar Krelja.
Ana Vidovic began playing the guitar at the early age of five and at thirteen she was the youngest student ever to enter the Musical Academy in Zagreb, where she studied with Professor Istvan Romer. Currently she is attending the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD, where she is further refining her remarkable gifts under the tutelage of world renown guitarist Manuel Barrueco.

The Aurelia Saxophone Quartet takes its name from the Roman district where the group was founded in 1982 during a tour of the Dutch National Youth Orchestra. The concerts they gave in Rome were so successful that they decided to continued playing together back home in the Netherlands.
In addition to performing the traditional and modern quartet-compositions, the Aurelia Quartet has above all made a name with its own arrangements, two of which can be heard on this record.

Comments:
Penguin: Previn's 1975 analogue version, vividly recorded, still leads the available recorded performances of Orff's most popular work. It is strong on humour and rhythmic point. The chorus sings vigorously, the men often using an aptly rough tone, and if there is at times a lack of absolute precision, the resilience of Previn's rhythms, finely sprung, brings out a strain not just of geniality but of real wit. This is a performance which swaggers along and makes you smile. The recording captures the antiphonal effects impressively, better even in the orchestra than in the chorus. Among the soloists, Thomas Allen's contribution is one of the glories of the music making, and in their lesser roles the soprano and tenor are equally stylish. The digital re-mastering is wholly successful. The choral bite is enhanced, yet the recording retains its full amplitude. The background hiss has been minimised and is only really apparent in the quieter vocal solos in the latter part of the work. A triumphant success.

The Huelgas Ensemble was founded by director Paul Van Nevel in 1971. It has specialized in choral music, frequently with instrumental support, from the thirteenth century on to the early Baroque. Their recordings of the High Renaissance have been especially prized. They have also been pioneers in the performance of the difficult Ars Subtilior repertory of the late medieval era.

Background information:
Si Ji in Chinese is Four Seasons. We have chosen it to be the title of this "China" inspired album. I hope this disc will leave you with an image of variety and diversity of colors, like the four seasons.
As a musician, I feel a responsibility to communicate between different cultures and people through my music. As an artist from China, I would like to infuse the culture of my country in my music. As a guitarist, I hope to make a small contribution towards expanding the guitar repertoire, exploring new possibilities and enriching the techniques for the instrument.
The guitar originated in the Middle East, halfway between China and the West. Chinese culture is refined, poetic, expressive and adaptable, like Chinese painting. These virtues can be usefully applied to the guitar. I was struck by the possibilities of the instrument after recording this CD how ideas from the east have helped in exploring and enriching what is essentially western music.
I make music from my heart as always, and I hope that you will respond in a similar way.
Xuefei Yang (from the liner notes)

Recording Dvorák in West Berlin in 1968 with a Russian cellist was a political as well as a cultural act. Barely a month after the crushing of the Prague Spring by Warsaw Pact tanks, here was Rostropovich playing one of the supreme achievements of Czech music with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Whether politics had any influence on the performance is a moot point, but the occasion certainly resulted in what must be the most inspiring and uplifting account of the cello concerto on disc.
Rostropovich was then in his prime as a cellist, with his full-bodied, singing tone weighed down by a characteristically raw-edged emotion. No note seems wasted, and he conveys the hopes and fears of Dvorák's imagination with unremitting involvement and intensity.
In von Karajan he has the ideal accompanist, ever supportive yet allowing the orchestra its head in the climaxes - and what an orchestra it sounds on this rich-toned remastering.
As perhaps the best-loved work in the cellists' repertoire, every player wants to record it, but no one has quite equalled Rostropovich's 1968 account, not even his earlier and later selves caught on rival recordings, both studio and live, on Warner, BBC Legends and Testament among other labels.
One undisputed classic is Gregor Piatigorsky's 1960 recording with Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony (RCA 82876663752), full of fire but marred by a fierce recorded sound out of keeping with the work's lyrical warmth.
Another strong contender is Jacqueline du Pré in a live Prom recording from 1969 with Charles Groves and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic on BBC Legends (BBCL41562) - typically heartfelt and full of her sense of emotional commitment. But for a performance that combines historical importance with artistic greatness, Rostropovich wins the palm.
