Ravi Prasad & Pedro Soler
Al Sur ALCD 253, 1999

1. Gayatrirag
2. Bodas de naja
3. Kanjira Farruca
4. Srushti
5. Tampura minera
6. Kuruvi Kkaran
7. Rupak - Tal de fiesta
8. Du Gange au Guadalquivir

Ravi Prasad - vocals, percussion, flute
Pedro Soler - flamenco guitar

Ravi Prasad is a Paris-based Indian singer and multi-instrumentalist trained in the South Indian (=karnatic) tradition of classical vocal music. He is producing some of the most interesting fusion music. My favourite album, "Entre Deux" (Radio France, 2002), features a string trio, the equally beautiful "Polyphonies" (Buda, no year) has a French vocal quartet, and "Pooja" (Tandem, 1996) is a solo album. Here he is accompanied by the Flamenco guitarist Pedro Soler.

Recorded by National Bulgarian Radio 1970-91.

Quote:
The Bulgarian National Radio has a rich collection of thousands of recordings, from which the selection for the present compact disc was made. It still continues to record performances of authentic songs and instrumental tunes, even in the former villages, now in the outskirts of the urbanised city of Sofia. The performers are true bearers of a family folk-musical tradition.
Some of them, like the Vladimir and Mitko Mitev brothers [Track 1] are civil officers in the Municipal Council, Simeon Spassov [Track 17] is a miner. Yanka Roupkina and Stoyan Velichkov [Track 28] became professional performers and now present their art in the most famous international concert halls. Mihail Kalfov [Track 20], Nedko Petrov [Track 29], the Christmas carol-singers from the village of Obelya [Track 10], Linka and Menka from the village of Bistritsa [Track 23], and many others who have left us priceless recordings, are long deceased but in their lifetime they succeeded in creating a lasting interest in the young generation, by passing on to them their repertoire and style.
There are field and factory workers among the performer of the music in the present compact disc, unknown singers and players whose talent brings joy to the people during family and traditional festivities and in everyday life.

Songs of everyday life, some polyphonic, some solo.

Quote:
France: Landes de Gascogne, La Cornemuse [Ocora C 560051] is another CD that focuses on the bagpipes of a particular French region. Unlike Chabretas, it features five different pipers. Four of these are what we would call “revivalists”: people who, in the 70s, learned to build and play the bagpipes of the Landes, reinventing the tradition as they went. The fifth piper featured on the disc is Jeanty Benquet, considered the last of the traditional Landes pipers; Benquet died in 1957, leaving behind only one recording, from which three selections appear on this collection. While we must imagine that Benquet’s playing is closer to the “old style” of Landes piping, we know that he was a cosmopolitan traveler and a semi-professional entertainer, and thus subject to outside influences. No other recording of a traditional Landes piper was ever made, and this one was discovered only recently. Therefore, the post-1968 revival of Landes piping is based much more on Slavic models, and on personal creativity, than on the Landes past. It is an excellent example of a creatively invented tradition. The four revivalists all play their instruments with aplomb, some alone and others with accompaniment from fiddlers, hurdy-gurdy players and clarinetists. Most of the melodies are intended for dancing, and they have a breezy lift that makes for most pleasant listening — provided one likes the sharp tones of the bagpipe to begin with. One interesting feature of the Landes pipe is a short pipe for accompaniment of the melody. It can be sounded more or less continuously as a drone, or used rhythmically like the regulators of the Irish uillean pipes and the trompette of the French hurdy-gurdy. It adds a bit of texture and complexity to several of the tunes on this disc, and is especially noticeable in Benquet’s playing. Like Chabretas. (Rootsworld)

Katice is a women's vocal group from Ljubljana brought and kept together by their enthusiasm for a large diversity of Slovene folk songs as well as by a strong desire to seek for yet untrodden paths of combining old, simple and beautiful songs with new times and musical tastes. These songs are authentic folk songs coming from all regions of Slovenia, and they lay a particular stress on those coming from marginal parts of Slovene ethnical territory, namely Rezija, Bela Krajina, Istria and Prekmurje. It is especially in these regions that the folk songs, under the influence of the neighbouring countries, attained an extraordinary richness of expression. Katice are also interested in contemporary arrangements of folk songs so as to bring Slovene tradition closer to the present day situation. In the last ten years, our way of life has changed drastically, and so has the role of folk songs. This is why Katice find a challenge in unveiling new dimensions lying hidden in folk songs: thus their combining the old with the new, the traditional with the contemporary.

At the very beginning, their repertoire contained folk songs in their more or less authentic form. These songs were first to be recorded on a CD ("Katice", 1995) and can be found in various publications and original recordings made by the Institute of Ethnomusicology in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The second CD ("Se dela greh ...se slisi smeh", 1998) already introduces their first arrangement of a folk song, "Ma saua cenca". Since then, the number of arrangements has been constantly growing. The third and last CD ("Jungfraua", 2001) gives birth to but arrangements, and three compositions ("Jungfraua", "Gizdava" and "Istrijanka") have an instrumental and electronic musical background.
