| Quote: | Professor Tran Van Khe is one of the greatest masters of the traditional Vietnamese music. Born into a family with four generations of musicians, he was taught the musical tradition of the family by his paternal aunt Tran Ngoc Vien and his maternal uncle Nguyen Tri Khuong, having lost his parents at a very early age. Professor Tran Van Khe is a Doctor in Musicology; he carried out research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (C.N.R.S.), has been a teacher at Paris-Sorbonne University, and is Honorary Member of the Conseil international de la musique (Unesco). His scientific research along with his activity in traditional music (participation in numerous festivals, several recordings edited with Ocora, l'Unesco and A.C.C.T.) have led to his receiving many distinctions and prizes from prestigious universities, academies and international institutions. He is able to play many Vietnamese instruments: dan kim or dan nguyet (moon-shaped lute), dan tranh (sixteen stringed zither), dan co or dan nhi (two-stringed fiddle), dan ty ba (pear-shaped, four stringed lute) and the trong nhac, ceremonial drum. He knows how to recite poems and sing in traditional styles of the North and the South.
Professor Tran's expertise includes all Asian music, particularly Indian, Persian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic musical traditions. Having lived in Paris for about 50 years, and traveled world wide, lecturing and performing, he has played key role in introducing Asian music into the western world. In the past 50 years, He has produced a number of Ph. D.'s and tought several thousands of students all over the world. |

The Greatest Composer from India ever is Ilayaraja...Strength is to seamlessly fuse New Age Electronica, Jazz along with our local Hindustani and Carnatic tracks. Indian composers normally lack originality and Ilayaraja is an odd exception.

| Quote: | This CD contains everything (well almost) every piece of music and type of music found in Bali. I found it really enjoyable to be able to hear a sample of everything not just pure gamelan music. Other recordings including the chanting of priest and priestess during sacred or important ceremonies which deal with the life cycle. While other founds are much too familiar and could be found in other recordings which appear every now and then as a common theme or popular theme like gender wayang for the wayang kulit (shadow theatre) where the dalang (narrator) manipulates the leather puppets through dialogue and through storytelling. The humming, tinkling and jinggling sound of the gender wayang making a wonderful delicate backdrop as the story unfolds.
There are also music for cremation often associated with the gamelan angklung playing their happy melodic tones while the dead corpses are sent on their final mission from earth to the heaven. The sounds are wonderful and the musician is able to capture the Balinese everyday life sounds and ceremonies which deals with the so called life-cycle. Other orchestras include what sounds like gamelan gong associated with temple rituals and is the half way mark between gamelan gong gede and gamelan gong kebyar. The compositions including the classical dance like the pendet performed by women holding offerings as they entertain the gods. The sounds are very airy because of the suling and the metallophones filling in the gaps and embellising the piece.
Chanting by Jero Gede from Barong Landung is something typical of Balinese theatre and they are considered as sacred effigy. Rustic sounds of the rebab, rythmic sounds of the bamboo intermingling with the suling (flute). There's too much to explain talk about and I can go on forever... so I leave it to the listen for their ideas and opinions. - Kean Chhay Chang |

| Quote: | | Although Thai classical music can be traced back to the Sukhothai period (1250-1350) and the longer ensuing Ayuthaya period (1350-1767) the golden age of surviving pieces is the last 200 years. The Thai people migrated from southern China in the thirteenth century, but absorbed many Indian influences from the Khmers, whom they conquered by the fifteenth century. They also embraced Buddhism, which today remains the religion of the vast majority of Thais. Thai music is a unique blend of Chinese, Indian, Burmese, Cambodian, Javanese and other influences. The prevalence of percussion-based orchestras, heterophonic layering of parts, equidistant and pentatonic tuning systems shows many affinities with the Gamelan music of Java and Bali, as with the music of Burma and Cambodia. |
| Quote: | | "Fong Naam" means "bubbles" and is the perfect name for this talented ensemble playing ebullient, happy Buddhist funeral music with cascades of shimmering notes and joyous melodies. Also included is "The Language Suite," an assembly of colorful contrasts in which tunes are invented using the extended musical vocabularies of neighboring cultures. - "Blue" Gene Tyranny |
