Angélique Kidjo's high-powered soprano and stage charisma have carried the diminutive singer far from her native country of Bénin. She recorded her first solo album in Paris, her second in Miami, and her new one, Ayé in London with Soul II Soul's Will Mowat as one producer and in Minneapolis with Prince sidekick David Z. as the other. Kidjo sings in Fon and Yoruba (West African languages), but both producers as well as her cowriter Jean Hébrail reinforce her African rhythms with programmed drums and synths. The result is neither African music nor Anglo-American pop but a strange hybrid that contains some of the most exciting dance music anywhere today.
African purists will be annoyed that Mowat and Z. have pushed Kidjo even further from her roots than before. American dance club denizens will be bothered that they can't understand what she's singing (the translations in the CD booklet for Ayé suggest they aren't missing much--mere platitudes about optimism, tolerance, the homeless, love and God). Americans may also be thrown by the skipping polyrhythms of Kidjo's music, so different from the fat, on-the-one funk they're used to. Yet it's Kidjo's ability to sing strong and hard (with a little sizzle in her timbre as the notes trail off) even as she skips effortlessly through the polyrhythms that makes her sound so fresh. Her triumph is not the breakthrough of real Sub-Saharan music but of a new international pop that marries West African beats to the technology of the Western dance record.

Kidjo takes further strides from African tradition to western soul-pop with the star-studded, 10-track Fifa. The diminutive diva from Benin with the big voice may offend some with her perceived "sellout," but she answers in turn that western pop is a worldwide phenomenon--and she is not afraid to assimilate it into her own music. With stars like Ray Lema and Jacob Desvarieux backing her up, Kidjo determinedly goes where she wants. Underneath the glossy beats of tracks like "Wombo Lombo," "Welcome," and "Koro Koro" lies a canny use of traditional structures and motifs. Kidjo can also handle pure African ballads like "Naima" (with guitar work from Carlos Santana), but her ability to marry music forms has hindered the efforts of the marketing folks, confused by an artist with feet so firmly planted on both sides of the aisle.

Comments:
Angelique Kidjo is one of the most electrifying artists in the Pop world. With effortless cross-pollination of the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America, no artist makes music for the world quite like Angelique Kidjo. She spices her funky, vocal-driven dance music with rhythmic and percussive details of her homeland. The distinctly African drumbeats on most of her albums, as well as the richness of her voice and the rhythm of her native language, Fon, have given Kidjo a boost in her rise to the status of international musical sensation.

BLACK IVORY SOUL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best World Music Album.
For the Bill Laswell-produced BLACK IVORY SOUL, Angelique Kidjo's first album since 1998's OREMI, the world music diva explores the link between the Brazilian city of Bahia and her home country of Benin. Befitting her multi-cultural background, Kidjo worked with an impressive range of talent including Brazilians Carlinhos Brown and Vinicius Cantaria, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and soul singer Cindy Mizelle. The result is an album's worth of music that's very much percussion-driven and peppered with plenty of irresistible grooves ranging from the life affirming "Tumba," (which is the name for congas in Benin), to the airy, acoustic guitar-dappled "Ominira" (Yoruba for freedom).
Among the few English-language songs are the funky title track with its Fela-lite backbeat and the infectious "Iwoya," seemingly a stab at college radio airplay by way of guest Dave Matthews's vocal contribution. Kidjo also continues her penchant for unusual covers--this time out, Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens" is given a delicate rendering and Gilberto Gil's "Refavela" benefits from a sassy, percussion-soaked interpretation sung in the African dialect of Fon. BLACK IVORY SOUL is a glimpse at what the future of global pop looks like entering the 21st Century.

Over the years, Benin-born singer Angelique Kidjo has mixed her native African music with elements of other styles. While 1998's Oremi looked at the music of the United States and 2002's Black Ivory Soul found Kidjo tasting the fruits of Brazilian music, the third installment of Kidjo's New World trilogy, Oyaya!, is her take on Caribbean music. Here she retraces old slave trade routes to connect African root music styles to such offshoots as salsa, bolero, meringue, calypso and ska. Of the 13 originals, Congo Habanera is a particularly potent combination of salsa-fueled grooves, watery highlife guitars and African drumming. Singing in French, Fon and Mino, Kidjo's world-class voice can be keening and hard-edged ("Bissimilai") or coy and gentle ("N'yin Wan Nou Wé"), often juxtaposing the two extremes in the same song ("Bala Bala"). Angelique Kidjo continues to crest with Oyaya!, again proving that everything is within reach of her considerable talent.

Recorded at Quad Studios and Hit Factory, New York, New York; Gravity and Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, Illinois; Downtown Studios, Johannesburg, South Africa.
OREMI was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best World Music Album.
Singer and songwriter Angelique Kidjo has her feet planted in many worlds on OREMI, and it sounds fantastic. A cosmopolitan hailing from Benin, West Africa, Angelique maneuvers gracefully and transcendently across the African Diaspora and back. Her studio assemblage here is a fine one, in that they help her thread tight seams between "urban" sounds, funk, jazz and the pop of her home region, leading to an outstanding production that sounds as organic as it is diverse.
"Itche Koutche" is robust street-funk that features special guest Branford Marsalis on soprano sax, blowing a lovely batch of sonic bubbles. "Babalao" does more of the same but with a decidedly Deep Forest feel. Jazz chanteuse Cassandra Wilson adds honey to the sage and mellow "Never Know." While no rendition of Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" may ever rip as ferociously as the original, Kidjo's layered vocal overdubs, jumbo-sized bass lines and down-tempo treatment give it loads of attitude and shine all the same. As she coasts back and forth between her native tongue and English, Kidjo dispenses West African proverbial wisdom in a form both resonant and intensely hip, giving OREMI wide appeal.

The Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo has been a fixture on the world music scene since the early 1990s, with the success of her first internationally released album, PARAKOU. Her inclusive style blends African, Caribbean, Brazilian, and Western rock musical influences in an irresistible potpourri, crowned with her powerful, distinctive voice, which can turn on a dime from sweet to savage.
Helmed by the veteran producer Tony Visconti, DJIN DJIN follows Kidjo's practice, established on previous albums, of featuring high-caliber guest vocalists, including in this case Peter Gabriel, Ziggy Marley, and Alicia Keys. The wide-ranging set encompasses the haunting, swaying "Salala," the delicate title track, and a typical Kidjo-style Africanized reworking of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" (on past albums she has also reinterpreted classics such as Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" and Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens"). It's a testament to her formidable musical personality and impeccable musical taste that, despite the presence of her high-powered guests, Kidjo puts her unique stamp on this impressive and eclectic collection.

What a playlist! Some African folk songs mixed with the African-American R&B of Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and James Brown. Sidney Bechet and Bollywood. Santana's 'Samba Pa Ti' and a South African lullaby. And it all works together perfectly. It would be tough to find a better mix on any hour of even the most eclectic radio or club DJ set.
But it's on 'Oyo,' the upcoming album from Angélique Kidjo -- due for release in February, though she gave Around the World an early listen and a chance to talk with her about it. The follow-up to the Benin-born star's 2007 contemporary world-music Grammy Award-winning album 'Djin Djin' contains all those things and more. And it's not just an exercise in random eclecticism. This is all music that inspired Kidjo in her youth in Africa to become the artist she is today, and in that regard is a soundtrack for her mission to provide health care and education opportunities for children in Africa and elsewhere in her role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and with her own Batonga Foundation.
