Zap Mama is an all-female a cappella quintet founded by Zaire native Marie Daulne. Daulne's father was killed during the revolution of 1960 while her mother was pregnant with her, so the remainder of the family fled to the forests and found refuge with a tribe of pygmies. Daulne was raised primarily in Europe, but when she heard a recording of traditional pygmy music at age 20, she decided to return to Africa to learn about her heritage. She was trained in pygmy onomatopoeic vocal techniques before returning to the West to found Zap Mama. Her group blends world music styles from all over the globe with little, if any, instrumental or percussive backup other than what group members can do with their voices and bodies. Their 1993 debut, Adventures in Afropea, became the biggest-selling non-compilation album in the history of Luaka Bop Records, helped in part by an opening slot on that summer's 10,000 Maniacs tour. A year later they released a follow-up, Sabsylma; 7 followed in 1997. A Ma Zone appeared in 1999. Zap Mama returned to Luaka Bop for 2004's Ancestry in Progress. Supermoon was issued by Heads Up in 2007.

Unavailable in the U.S.! This is the original issue of the female African accapella outfit's first album, which was eventually released in America as Adventures In Afropea Vol. One. This edition of their debut, which is still considered their finest studio recording, features 'Etupe', which does not appear on the U.S. edition of album. Zap Mama, formed by Marie Daulne, originally from Zaire, tackle a variety of World Music styles and have received unending critical acclaim for their inventive arrangements and their live performances.

A sprawling example of "world groove," Zap Mama's sixth album is further proof that in these interconnected times the musical world really is shrinking. Born in the Congo and raised in the French culture of Belgium, Zap Mama founder and driving force Marie Daulne has always ignored the barriers between musical genres like so many outdated speed limits on a dusty highway, but on Supermoon she dips into so many styles--Afropop, R&B, hip-hop, funk--as to reduce those barriers to a delightful irrelevancy. Helped by a smorgasbord of big-name collaborators--Me'shell N'degeocello, Tony Allen, and Spearhead's Michael Franti all guest for one track each--Daulne turns African pygmy music into a rollicking club anthem on "Gati," borrows James Brown's "Payback" guitar riff on "Toma Taboo," uses the intricate polyrhythmic arrangement of "Go Boy" for a touching tale of an African immigrant, and evokes modern soul singers like Macy Gray on the title track. Through it all, the intricate vocal arrangements and production that are Zap Mama's trademark--performed largely by Daulne herself--never fail to astonish.

Sabsylma follows the debut album Zap Mama (/Adventures in Afropea) in a similar vein. The voice again is the instrument and the group put their vocal talent through hoops. My favourites number "(Nous passons) de la vie a la mort" - a joyful falsetto anticipation of death. "Fi Dounia"-I am a sucker for the Arabic style numbers- about drinking tea at a cafe-"take your time..because when you've reached the morning don't count on the evening, and when you've reached the evening don't count on the morning"- cheerful stuff, eh? "For no one (will I go to hell)" is a solo (multi-) track by Marie Daulne about the soullessness of living in a city.
