The oud (Arabic: عود ʿūd; Somali: Kaban; Persian: بربط barbat; Turkish: ud or ut; Greek: ούτι; Armenian: ուդ, Azeri: ud; Hebrew: עוד ud) is a pear-shaped, stringed instrument, which is often seen as the predecessor of the western lute, distinguished primarily by being without frets, commonly used in Middle Eastern music.
According to Farabi, the oud was invented by Lamech, the sixth grandson of Adam. The legend tells that the grieving Lamech hung the body of his dead son from a tree. The first oud was inspired by the shape of his son's bleached skeleton.[2] The oldest pictorial record of a lute dates back to the Uruk period in Southern Mesopotamia - Iraq - Nasria city nowadays, over 5000 years ago on a cylinder seal acquired by Dr. Dominique Collon and currently housed at the British Museum. The image depicts a female crouching with her instruments upon a boat, playing right-handed. This instrument appears many times throughout Mesopotamian history and again in ancient Egypt from the 18th dynasty onwards in long and short-neck varieties. One may see such examples at the Metropolitan Museums of New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and the British Museum on clay tablets and papyrus paper. This instrument and its close relatives have been a part of the music of each of the ancient civilizations that have existed in the Mediterranean and the Middle East regions, including the Sumerians, Akkadians, Persians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Armenians, Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans.
The ancient Turkic peoples had a similar instrument called the kopuz. This instrument was thought to have magical powers and was brought to wars and used in military bands. This is noted in the Göktürk monument inscriptions, the military band was later used by other Turkic state's armies and later by Europeans.[3] According to Musicolog Çinuçen Tanrıkorur today's oud was derived from the kopuz by Turks near Central Asia and additional strings were added by them.[4] Today's oud is totally different from the old prototypes and the Turkish oud is different from Arabic oud in playing style and shape. The Turkish is derived from modifying the Arabic oud, whose development has been attributed to Manolis Venios, a well known Greek luthier who lived Constantinople (Istanbul) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.[citation needed] In Greece and Armenia musicians especially use the Turkish ouds and tunings.[citation needed]
Aleppo musician with an oud, 1915.The oud has a particularly long tradition in Iraq,[5] where a saying goes that in its music lies the country’s soul.[5] A ninth-century Baghdad jurist praised the healing powers of the instrument, and the 19th century writer Muhammad Shihab al-Din related that it "places the temperament in equilibrium" and "calms and revives hearts."[5] Following the invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of the secular Hussein regime in 2003, however, the increasing fervor of Islamic militants who consider secular music to be haraam (forbidden) forced many Oud players or teachers into hiding or exile |

When this set--part of the Nonesuch Explorer Series--was first released, Hamza El Din had already headlined at the Newport Folk Festival and Woodstock and released an album on the Vanguard label. But this was the one that put him on the map, bringing his oud (Arab lute,) tar (an ancient frame drum), and plaintive vocals to a much wider audience. Born in 1929, El Din has dedicated his life to the music of his ancestral homeland of Nubia, much of which now lies underwater in the shadow of the Aswan Dam. The title track, a 21-minute meditation based on the creaking, rhythmic sounds of a wooden water wheel, later became his signature work. Despite the unadorned simplicity of his forces, El Din evokes centuries of laboring agrarian workers. He later re-recorded the piece several times, including a version with the Kronos Quartet, but he has never quite duplicated the tidal ebb-and-flow of the original performance. --Christina Roden

Improvisations, variations and compositions describing Ziryáb's journey from Baghdad to Cordova more than one thousand years ago Ziryab, one of the most important names in Andalusí music, was a great singer at the court of Harun al-Rashidnin Baghdad during the 9th century After a quarrel, he left and settled in Al-Andalus, founding a music school in Córdoba His influence extended to Seville, Granada, Toledo and Valencia, and thence to Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, where it may still be felt todayThe Iraqi lutenist Naseer Shamma here cements this complex web of traditions stemming from Ziryab with a disc of his own improvisations (all informed by his own extensive knowledge as performer, musicologist and teacher) on the maqamat (loosely translatable as modes) brought by Ziryab when he left Baghdad

Abdelaziz Abdellah, known by his nickname "Alla", is a self-taught Algerian oud player who developed his own style of improvisation and became known as an unusually creative virtuoso who improvised in a very different style of oud than other masters. He comes from Bechar in the Algerian Sahara and his music is ample and has a spiritual dimension. It is intense and light at the same time and brings that inner silence that takes its roots in the desert. Alla is recognised as the best oud player in all of southern Oran. He has held several concerts in Europe, including the Theatre de la Ville in Paris. Recently he began mixing accents from other Mediterranean regions in his music.

Hamza el-Din was born in Nubia, amongst the people of the Upper Nile. While studying engineering in Cairo he took up the oud, and later went on to study the instrument at the Conservatory of Music in Cairo during his spare time. It was at this time, and while undertaking further study in Rome, that he began to develop his unique style, which blends themes from Nubian traditional music with the more structured framework of Arabic classical music.

The meeting of oud master Hamza El Din and the adventurous audiophile label Waterlily Acoustics was something that simply had to happen. El Din's music, so thoughtful and often lulling, is tailor-made for the sonic sharpness that is the label's trademark. And the result doesn't disappoint. This might not be the classic that Escalay (The Water Wheel) or A Wish are, but it's still a gorgeous record, slow and meditative, with El Din's voice and oud washing over the listener like a large Nubian wave. Pieces like "Shortunga" are ideal for contemplation; the refreshing and far more upbeat "Hamayala" brings things up to speed for the finale. Lily of the Nile is a distinct change from El Din's previous disc, Muwashshah (which teamed him with some of his Japanese students), and a real return to his roots.

"Muwashshah…proves that good music is universal…the album is marked by El Din’s understated oud playing, warm vocals, and strong symphonic sense of melody." - MUSICHOUND WORLD
Arguably the most famous of all Arabic musicians, Hamza El Din hails from Nubia, now-underwater land of the Aswan High Dam in Northern Africa. His 1963 album on Vanguard, Music of Nubia, was the first recording of Afro-Arabic music to be distributed in the West. He is a titan of world music, an ambassador of Nubian culture, the founder of the modern Nubian music tradition, and the world’s greatest player of the oud (an Arabic lute-like instrument). Hamza El Din first started singing as a means to warn his people about the inevitable destruction of their land due to the High Dam. He spent years wandering and collecting traditional music. He later studied classical Arabic music, and then in Rome began working on a synthesis of Arabic, Nubian and Western music. When he was finished studying in Rome, the High Dam had been built and he was homeless. Since then, he has become a citizen of the world, traveling and playing on all continents, and eventually emigrating to the Bay Area in California. Muwashshah is a tribute to Ziryab, a legendary African slave who escaped from the court of Bagdad to become one of Arabic music’s most important composers, and is one of El Din’s most celebrated recordings, called "a triumph" by All Music Guide.
