@ VBR mp3

This CD truly deserves its legendary status. It was recorded way back in 1965 at the start of what has turned out to be one of the most exciting and frustrating careers in history; exciting because Argerich is arguably the greatest pianist alive, and frustrating because she refuses to give solo recitals, preferring the support of friends and colleagues in chamber or orchestral concerts. That makes her rare solo outings all the more precious. This disc exactly duplicates her debut recital for DG, which release and subsequent exclusive contract forestalled EMI until now. Rumor had it that the EMI was better, and on the whole it is, though both are pretty exceptional by any standards. The differences are relatively minor, but include an even more brilliant response to the Polonaise in A flat, tighter rhythm in the Scherzo No. 3, and a few incidental touches in the Sonata No. 3 and elsewhere. Chopin lovers and fans of this artist certainly need no further recommendation. Now, if only she would record some new solo repertoire - we can only hope.

***********
A lot of pianophiles have been waiting for the reissue of this 1980 LP, Argerich's only Bach recording. She played the same Partita at her Carnegie Hall recital in the Spring of 2000, suggesting that she just doesn't play much Bach. These performances have the pianist's typical intensity of approach. Her fingers do the talking, with some dazzling clear articulation reminiscent of Glenn Gould on a good day, and she seldom blurs any of the textures. She also has a very good feeling for Bach's dance rhythms; the closing Gigue of the Partita makes you want to jump up and put on your dancing shoes. Argerich uses an unusually wide dynamic range for Bach, and some of the dreamy slow movements won't be to the taste of all listeners. Nobody, though, will be able to ignore these performances; while they are playing, they seem like the only way to do it. The 1980 sound is still fine, and although the disc is LP length (50 minutes), the price is right.

Comments:
Ivo Pogorelich’s performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is hardly tailor-made for ‘easy listening’ or for musical philistines (as in Schumann’s time, they are still very much with us). Magnificently unsettling, he offers a re-creation of the most concentrated force and drama, articulated with a crystalline mastery. Received wisdom is challenged at every level and doubting Thomases provoked to speak of exaggeration or undue idiosyncrasy can usually be answered by reference to the score. Pogorelich’s cleansing and revitalizing is at once evident in the opening “Promenade” where each single crotchet and quaver is accented precisely as marked before Mussorgsky’s more subdued chordal extension. “The gnome” is truly vivo and meno vivo with the sharpest differentiation between fortissimo and piano, while in “The old castle” the troubadour sings his song of “old, unhappy, far-off things/And battles long ago” with the most arresting sense of the composer’s con dolore marking. The central and relative calm of “Tuileries” is played in a touchingly unfamiliar way and if “Bydlo” commences fortissimo rather than piano, is more inclined towards pesante than sempre moderato, the effect is both uncompromising and indelibly Russian. “Unhatched chickens” is ideally rather than manically paced (memorably scherzino and vivo leggiero) while “Limoges” is clarified with a prodigious force and mastery. “Catacombe” and “Con mortuis in lingua mortua” provide an oasis of pulsating and shimmering calm, and how cunningly Pogorelich differentiates the semiquavers and tremolandos at the heart of Baba-jaga’s frenzied flight. A magisterial view of the “Great Gate of Kiev” concludes a performance of rare poetic verisimilitude, a reminder of music fired at “point blank range” and of the “fiercest modernity” (Pierre Jasmin in his superb accompanying notes).
To an even greater extent Pogorelich’s way with Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales is not for the faint-hearted. But if his lavish rubato and inflexion and sometimes moonstruck tempos make conventional Francophiles throw up their hands in despair, and turn to more accommodating interpretations, I can only say that Pogorelich’s ideas are more acute than arbitrary, a richly personal response to Ravel’s demands for freedom and fantasy (avec une expression intense, peu plus lent et rubato, mysterieux, etc.). True, Pogorelich’s tempo for No. 3, where modere becomes lent will cause comment, his sudden vif in No. 6 set the fur flying. Yet such is his magic and focus that the results are fascinating and hypnotic, particularly when backed by such million dollar pianism. You may well end simultaneously in a critical frame of mind yet pondering when you last enjoyed Ravel’s piquancy and “subtle correspondences” (Jasmin again) so much; a delicious paradox magnificently recorded and presented by DG.'

Chopin's nationalistic side brought out the best in Artur Rubinstein. The pianist's stereo remakes yield nothing in pomp and swagger to his two earlier Polonaise cycles from the thirties and fifties, and benefit from upgraded engineering and more rhythmic exactitude. While Rubinstein's cheery traversal of the Polonaise Fantasie glosses over the work's brooding, introspective qualities, the pianist is thoroughly in his element elsewhere, especially in his signature A Flat and F Sharp Minor Polonaises. You won't go wrong with this disc.

You just can't listen to this music without feeling good. These waltzes--aside from containing some of the most famous tunes ever written for the piano--are so lovely, so toe-tappingly appealing, so perennially fresh sounding (even the Minute Waltz) that you won't believe they're more than 150 years old. They sound like they were composed yesterday. A lot of the credit for this belongs to Rubinstein, who plays them with such grace and naturalness that you're hardly even conscious of a human being at the keyboard. The music seems to float effortlessly from Chopin's fertile imagination right into you heart and mind. It's so lovely it's almost embarrassing.
