Background information:
Si Ji in Chinese is Four Seasons. We have chosen it to be the title of this "China" inspired album. I hope this disc will leave you with an image of variety and diversity of colors, like the four seasons.
As a musician, I feel a responsibility to communicate between different cultures and people through my music. As an artist from China, I would like to infuse the culture of my country in my music. As a guitarist, I hope to make a small contribution towards expanding the guitar repertoire, exploring new possibilities and enriching the techniques for the instrument.
The guitar originated in the Middle East, halfway between China and the West. Chinese culture is refined, poetic, expressive and adaptable, like Chinese painting. These virtues can be usefully applied to the guitar. I was struck by the possibilities of the instrument after recording this CD how ideas from the east have helped in exploring and enriching what is essentially western music.
I make music from my heart as always, and I hope that you will respond in a similar way.

This extremely well filled, eclectic and diverse CD shows off Sharon Isbin's artistry extremely well. Its diversity of styles is proven by the range of Bach (2nd movement from keyboard concerto in F, BWV 1056 and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, from Cantata no 147) and Vivaldi (Concerto in D RV 93) selections on the one hand and Tan Dun's modern (first movement from his guitar concerto) and Christopher Rouse's equally new (first movement from his "Concert de Gaudi") selections on the other. This later piece rounds off the recital with real panache. Music of all periods is performed with great éclat and élan. Mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer sings Rodrigo's "Aranjuez, ma pensée" as well as "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair" and Martini's "Plaisir d'amour". She sings them as beautifully as I have heard by any other singer, with the possible exception of Nana Mouskouri. Her vocal selections are also interspersed throughout the album in a most effective manner. Zapateado by Regino Sainz de la Maza is despatched with just the right amount of breeziness as are all the short "etudelike" pieces. The great guitar virtuoso Laurindo Almeida is represented by a short but jazzy Choro "Historia do Luar"; while another Choro Alegre (A hug for Tiberio) by Gaudencio Thiago de Mello is dashed off with great effusiveness. Albinoni's alleged "Adagio" is rendered with much pathos as is Tarrega's romantic "Recuerdos de la Alhambra". Toru Takemitsu's almost bluesy "Londonderry Air" provides a piquant mid-point for the entire recital. Altogether, this is an excellent representation of Ms. Isbin's artistry. Definitely recommended.

Background information:
The disc covers two centuries of music, providing a searching test for the soloist. The Bach Suite has had a strange history. It started life as a work for violin, and was then arranged for lute. Now in a modern adaptation is appears in an arrangement for guitar. The work has become one of the composer's best known, the Gavotte third movement being performed in many guises. The Sonata by Ponce was composed in 1929, and pays homage to the music of Franz Schubert. In four contrasting movements, it is engaging music of a lyrical nature, happy in general mood, but is in no way derivative of the famous composer.

The works by TÃ¡rrega are typically colourful Spanish scores, packed full of virtuosity and vivacity. They are late 19th century in general style, and would have been used by the composer to please his audience. The three works by Sulek would meet our expectations of a composer who looked musically backwards. Walton, on the other hand, wrote five short movements that bristle with technical difficulties, the score residing in the mainstream of the 20th century.

Maria Luisa Anido known to her friends as "Mimia" was born in 1907 in Moron near Buenos Aires. She was a child prodigy who could play the Napoleon Coste Etude #22 in A Major at the age of 10. She recorded duets with no less than Miguel Llobet in 1927. Over 50 years ago she was made Professor of the guitar at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires. She died in June of 1996.

Sharon Isbin knows how to pick classical guitar works just about as well as she knows how to play them (which is to say, exceptionally well). On her Grammy Award-winning Dreams of a World, she explored folksy classical guitar works from around the world. On this disc, the music of two guitar concerto world premieres is less-familiar and just as exciting. Christopher Rouse's Concerto de Gaudi for Guitar and Orchestra is rooted in the Spanish idiom, but it has numerous twists and turns. Isbin gets plenty of tricky solo flights here, but the piece also features some truly explosive brass and percussion moments reminiscent of orchestral works by Ives and Revueltas. Tan Dun's commission for Isbin is less structured; there's plenty of improvisation where the guitarist is required to use tremolo to make her instrument sound like a Chinese lute, or p'i-p'a. Again, you'll hear the influence of Spanish composers, though you never lose the influence of Eastern tonalities in Tan Dun's Impressionistic work. It's a fantastic showcase for Isbin's talents, though not necessarily a piece you'll want to hear every day. These live recordings boast great sonics, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra is in fine form.
