Jorma Kaukonen - River of Time (2009)
Acoustic Blues, Folk, Neo-Traditional | mp3 160kpbs | 57MB | Release Date: Feb 10, 2009.

Two years after Stars in My Crown, his Red House debut, guitarist Jorma Kaukonen follows up that fine effort with what could be considered "Stars in My Crown, Pt. 2". This year's model finds the ex-Jefferson Airplane and occasional Hot Tuna guitarist plowing similar turf as on the previous release. He stays unplugged and covers forgotten gems from Delta bluesmen (Mississippi John Hurt, his old fave Rev. Gary Davis), country icons (Merle Haggard), and adds some likeminded originals. It was recorded in Levon Helm's Woodstock, NY home studio so naturally the ex-Band member contributes his laid-back drums to a handful of tracks. Kaukonen's somewhat nasal voice has deepened with age and makes a perfect counterpoint to these already warm, folksy-bluesy tunes. In this context the old blues standard "Trouble in Mind" nestles in perfectly, especially with Helm's drums nudging the beat. Mandolinist Barry Mitterhoff, also back from the last disc, takes the lead on many tunes, and it's the combination of his licks with Kaukonen's acoustic picking that makes this album feel as comfortable as an old sweater on a chilly morning. Multi-instrumentalist/producer Larry Campbell, who also produced and played on Helm's 2007 successful comeback Dirt Farmer, is the secret weapon here, adding fiddles and various stringed instruments to enhance the sound. The elegiac instrumental "A Walk with Friends," featuring Campbell's crying pedal steel, stands out as one of the loveliest moments in Kaukonen's storied career, right up there with Hot Tuna's "Water Song." A jaunty version of the Grateful Dead's "Operator" takes us back to the guitarist's San Francisco roots and also serves as a tender shout out to the departed Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. A few Kaukonen originals, such as the overlong closing "Simpler Than I Thought" aren't quite up to the high standards of the rest of the disc, but this is still a welcome addition to the guitarist's long discography and an indication that at almost 70, the gifted musician remains as vital as ever.

Marc Ribot & Los Cubanos Postizos - The Prosthetic Cubans (1998)

mp3 256kbps | Jazz-Rock, Cuban Jazz | 87 MB
Quote:

The mastery and vision of the enduring Marc Ribot shine through on this release. Although there have been many attempts to produce authentic indigenous music of various cultures, most have fallen short; this album succeeds in the wake of failure. Ribot delves deep into Cuban rhythms, and indeed the album is a tribute to the Cuban master Arsenio Rodriguez. Here Ribot finds an authentic Cuban sound employing traditional instrumentation: upright bass, wood blocks, cherke, and other percussion sounds. The performance is inspired, and the band consistently tears through Rodriguez's material, as well as some of their own. Ribot's guitar work nears perfection, and he proves himself to be the most soulful white alive. Songs like "Aqui Como Alla" and "Postizo" confirm these assertions. Although this album does not present the iconoclastic Ribot of The Book of Heads fame, it is an excellent album.

Biography
Quote:
Eclectic guitarist Marc Ribot has recorded a wide variety of music over his career, working with Elvis Costello and on Tom Waits' Rain Dogs. He has also recorded compositions for classical guitar by Haiti's Franz Casseus, a friend of his parents, and has participated actively in New York City's downtown avant-garde music scene for some time, most notably as a member of the Lounge Lizards. Ribot's solo albums include Rootless Cosmopolitans and Requiem for What's His Name; later Ribot worked with his avant-garde jazz/rock fusion band, Shrek, whose eponymous debut was released in 1994. With a new group, he also issued Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos in 1998; Muy Divertido followed two years later. Additionally, Ribot played a major part in initiating the Radical New Jewish Culture Festival in Germany and New York City. Since that time, he has released a bevy of recordings including, among others, The Prosthetic Cubans in 1998, Muy Divertido! in 2000, Scelsi Morning in 2003, Asmodeus: The Book of Angels, Vol. 7 in 2007 and Ceramic Dog in 2008.

Rick Danko - Times Like These (2000)
mp3 320kbps HQ | Country, Country Rock | 101 MB | RS link

Times Like These was Band bassist Rick Danko's final album, a posthumous release featuring tracks from a variety of sources dating from an aborted solo project in 1993 to Danko's final live performance in Ann Arbor, Michigan just days before his death.

Those tracks recorded specifically for the project were the title track (a song Danko had written in the 1970s but had yet to find a place for), "Ripple" (suggested by the President of Breeze Hill Records, who issued the album), "All Our Past Times" (in keeping with Danko's revisiting of a song from his younger days), "This Wheel's on Fire" (a second, unfinished, revisit, it features an entirely redone arrangement by The Crowmatix and Garth Hudson), "You Can Go Home" and "People of Conscience" (both written by Tom Pacheco, the former co-written by Danko, and focusing on human rights). Of the remaining four, "Book Faded Brown" and "Let the Four Winds Blow"- the latter sung by Danko cohort Aaron Hurwitz- date from Danko's last live show on December 6, 1999, both featuring posthumous overdubbing by Hurwitz and others. "Chain Gang" dated from the sessions for The Band's High On The Hog album and featured all of the late-period members of The Band except Levon Helm and "Change is Good" featuring Joe Walsh dated from an aborted 1993 solo project for Elektra Records.

Track listing

1. "All Our Past Times" (Rick Danko and Eric Clapton) – 3:46

Sugar Blue - Paris to Chicago (1982)
Blues, Jazz | MP3 | 320kpbs HQ | Stereo | Total time: 72:31 | 160 MB | 3% recovery inf.

One of the foremost electric blues harpists of the modern era, Sugar Blue was born James Whiting in New York City in 1950. Sugar Blue relocated to Paris in 1976, where he was introduced to the Rolling Stones; he went on to play on the group's LP's Some Girls, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You, lending his skills to such hits as "Miss You." Before returning to the U.S. in 1982, Blue cut a pair of albums, Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago.
Blue went on to spend two years touring with his friend and mentor Willie Dixon as part of the Chicago Blues All Stars before putting his own band together in 1983.
With his own band, Blue's star continued to rise. He received the 1985 Grammy Award for his work on the Atlantic album, Blues Explosion, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
He recorded on Dixon's Grammy-winning Hidden Charms album in 1989.

Sugar Blue incorporates what he has learned into his visionary and singular style, technically dazzling yet wholly soulful. He bends, shakes, spills flurries of notes with simultaneous precision and abandon, combining dazzling technique with smoldering expressiveness and gives off enough energy to light up several city square blocks...

And sings too! His distinctive throat tends to be overlooked in the face of his instrumental virtuosity - he's got a rich, sensual voice with a whisper of huskiness which by itself would be something out of the ordinary. But oh, there's that harmonica again...

Tracklisting:
1. Pontiac Blues
2. Begging The Girl To Go
3. Dark and Hungry
4. Shed No Tears
5. War Zone
6. Who's Been Talking
7. Another Man Done Gone
8. Don't Start Me Talkin'
9. Help Me
10. Key to the Highway
11. That's Allright
12. Cold Blooded Man
13. Devil Woman
14. Secret Lover

The Gourds - Blood of the Ram (2004)
mp3 192kpbs | 66 MB | 3% recovery inf. | Alternative Country-Rock, Americana

Scorch-porch? Beergrass? Hick-hop? All three tags have attempted, and ultimately failed, to successfully relate to the masses the eclectic bits of meat and bone that make up Austin, TX, the Gourds. The bandmembers themselves describe their Twilight Zone, sepia-tone, gravy-drenched fools-gold nuggets as "music for the unwashed and well-read," and that sentiment couldn't be more apt in illustrating the dizzying redneck poetry that runs rampant on their sixth full-length release, The Blood of the Ram.
"Oklahoma has a dirty red mane/a Native American slot machine" is just one of the delicious images from co-founder Kevin Russell's ode to the "Lower 48." A spirited look at the nation through the windshield of a rusty tour bus, it's a fitting introduction to a collection of songs that are among the loosest and most road-trip-worthy of the quintet's decade-long career. The Gourds have always subscribed to the warts-and-all energy of recording live in the studio, and while Blood of the Ram retains all of the drunken barn jam whoops and missed cues of previous efforts, the troops are so well seasoned that even at their sloppiest -- Jimmy Smith's magnificently weird closer, "Turd in My Pocket" -- they manage to outperform most of their contemporaries in sheer enthusiasm alone. Theirs is a singular vision of local color ("Arapaho"), good old boys and girls gettin' caught and gettin' spanked ("Spanky"), and late-night treats both savory and illegal ("Cracklins"). Whether they're copping an obscure mid-song riff from Led Zeppelin's "Over the Hills and Far Away" or implementing bowed saw, Hammond organ, or a whimsically out of place penny whistle into the stew, the Gourds are in command and could care less how you think it sounds. In fact, it's a testament to their rustic charm, big vocabularies, and smoke-black Southwest humor that when Smith says, "You can't sh*t me/I already got a turd in my pocket," the listener laughs like an adoring younger sibling, despite having just been hoodwinked, again.

Tracklisting:
1. Lower 48
2. TTT Gas
3. Escalade
4. Illegal Oyster
5. Arapaho
6. Wired Ole Gal
7. On Time
8. Do 4 U
9. Let Him In

Bill Sims - Bill Sims (1999)
Blues | FLAC (sep. tracks) - 369MB | mp3 320 kbps - 115.6MB | 3% recovery inf.

Just like its title, Sims' eponymous PBS / Warner Brothers debut is unpretentious and solid: it's this singer-guitarist's personal overview of the blues. Sims' voice at its most soulful suggests a blues Gil Scott-Heron or Lou Rawls - smooth, deep rather than flashy, and bittersweet. Some of his guitar solos somehow sound like that too. He transforms "Nobody's Fault But Mine" into a back-porch banjo stomp, and tunes by Big Bill Broonzy and Charlie Patton into shifty New Orleans second-line funk. He also breaks down a mournful version of Howlin' Wolf's "Mr. Airplane Man," and brings onboard saxophonist Chico Freeman to intensify the slow-burning R&B heat in "Smoky City."

Tracklist:
01. Time Out Sims 4:28
02. I Want to See You Again 5:03
03. Smoky City 7:30
04. Dark Moon Risin' 4:06
05. As the Years Go Passin' By 5:27
06. When Do I Get to Be Called a Man 3:24
07. Just Like You 4:17
08. Black Mare 5:20
09. Blues for Breakfast 3:56
10. Mr. Airplane Man 5:31
11. Man Eater 6:30
12. Nobody's Fault But Mine 1:27

Personnel: Bill Sims (vocals, guitar); Chaney Wilson Sims (vocals); Brian Mitchell (accordion, piano, Hammond B3 organ); Chico Freeman, Donny McCaslin (tenor saxophone); Kenny Rampton (trumpet, cornet); Clark Gayton (trombone, tuba); George Mitchell (acoustic bass); Andy Hess (electric bass); Tony Mason (drums).

The Felice Brothers - Tonight At the Arizona (2007)
Americana | mp3 192kpbs | 57MB | RS links
Quote:

Perhaps the best way to describe Upstate New York's Felice Brothers is that they are a cross between Vincent Gallo and the Band; that is, they simultaneously ooze a sort of unwashed hipster sleaze (they are proudly self-professed "scumbags") and authentic, otherworldly Americana. As to the music on Tonight at the Arizona, it is the real deal...in spades. This is a new-millennium slant on the kind of poetical, fractured prism of America that critic Greil Marcus once exalted over in describing Bob Dylan and the Band. (The Felice's inhabit the same region of the Hudson Valley that is steeped in those artists' myths, and the cover of this album clearly echoes the Band.) This music sounds descended from ancient tradition, but also crosses contemporary concerns and an όber-literary consciousness. (In fact, drummer Simone Felice is a heralded novelist.) "The Ballad of Lou the Welterweight" begins by wheezing along on a wistful accordion line, signaling an historical plunge, then the narrative, spun out on quavering vocals, tells of the noble Lou's terrible demise in the ring at the hands of a brutish competitor ("a big dumb kid from Flushing"), inter-cutting it with his inner life, in which he yearns for his lover in the stands as he drifts to the canvas and into painful oblivion. But the Felice Brothers can't play a romantic tale straight or sentimental, and the refrain goes for the loins in a discomfiting manner: "Powder your nose/Pull down your pantyhose/Let me love you from behind/my darling/ Powder your nose/Put on your pantyhose/We're going down to my bout/my darling." The repeated line becomes a sort of internal mantra for the boxer. As the song proceeds and Lou (and all that he represents) slowly fades away, all that seems left of him is his love and lust as his strength and power expire. It is beautiful and inappropriate at once, which is exactly the rub with the Felice Brothers. "Rockefeller Druglaw Blues" is straight-out Dylan, even in vocal intonation. It doesn't try to be anything else. (It refers to the draconian drug laws in New York State, wherein someone can go away for a long time for a relatively small stash.) But the Felice's handling of the material is so perfect that one wonders why no one has written a folk song about this topic before: "Rockefeller, Rockefeller, that's a long old time" croons Ian Felice his vowels flattening into a Dylanesque apocalyptic whine as his narrator enters the land of orange jumpsuits. In the prologue to his book Mystery Train, Greil Marcus quotes the literary critic Leslie Fielder as raison d'etre for the volume: "We have always been, insofar as we are Americans at all, inhabitants of myth rather than history." Tonight at the Arizona picks up, circa 2007, where these ideas left off, but whether the listening world of myspace and Google is ready for the dive into stirring acoustic/myth-poetical consciousness that marks Tonight at the Arizona is another story. As to the Felice Brothers themselves: they seem all too aware of the twisting gyres of myth and history (and of their own predecessors) and have fashioned a wonderful album around that tension.

1. "Roll On Arte"
2. "Ballad Of Lou The Welterweight"
3. "Hey Hey Revolver"
4. "Your Belly In My Arms"
5. "Lady Day"
6. "T For Texas"
7. "Rockefeller Druglaw Blues"
8. "Mercy"
9. "Christmas Song"
10. "Going Going Gone"
11. "Take This Hammer (Live)"

The Felice Brothers - Through These Reins and Gone (2006)

Americana, Folk Blues | mp3 160kpbs | 61MB
Code:
Hailing from the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, the Felice Brothers blend folk, Americana, and revivalist roots rock into a uniquely Folk Bluesearthy sound. Released independently in late 2006, their debut Through These Reins And Gone was a tough slice of classic Americana played in a loose and ragged fashion befitting the brothers' self-confessed lack of musical ability.
Simone, Ian and James Felice are the oldest boys of seven children born along the Hudson River of Olde New York. Unschooled illegal street/subway musicians from the start, their distinct brand of songwriting and the lawless sound they've forged together has drawn them hard-earned comparisons to Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young, Walt Whitman, Bob Dylan and James Brown, and for some ungodly reason they now find their songs played on a growing list of FM radio dials nationwide. Their debut album, Through These Reins and Gone, was released independently in August 2006 and has recieved critical acclaim for it's haunting honesty and beautifuly raw feel.

The Felice Brothers - Adventures Of The Felice Brothers Vol. 1 (2007)

Americana, folk rock, country rock, roots rock | mp3 VBR~195kpbs | 68,7MB
Quote:
Adventures of The Felice Brothers Vol. 1 is available directly from the band at live shows. It was recorded on two-track tape in a chicken coop, “People seem to think that’s weird, but it was normal to us,” Felice said. “It was like a little tiny dirty house". This album features "Frankie's Gun!", perhaps their most widely recognized song. Adventures of The Felice Brothers Vol. 1 was listed as number 3 on WDST's Top 25 Albums of 2007, being beat only by Bruce Springsteen and Levon Helm. Adventures also contains their covers of two classic folk songs. A song called Ruby Mae is also based on their grandpa's "old sweetheart" as the brothers say. "Where'd You Get the Liquor" is a version of "Old Dan Tucker" and "Glory Glory" is a rendition of "Can the Circle be Unbroken".

1. "Frankie's Gun!"
2. "Trouble Been Hard"
3. "Ruby Mae"
4. "Radio Song"
5. "Helen Fry (She's A Master Of Disguise)"
6. "Walk A While"

Old 97's - Hit by a Train: The Best of Old 97's (2006)
Americana, Aternative Country-Rock | mp3 160kpbs | 73MB

One of the most popular bands in alt-country's rock & roll wing, Old 97's hailed from Dallas and drew their inspiration from classic country, bar band rock, the raw sound of early punk, and -- especially on their later records -- the tight songcraft of power pop.
In his liner notes to this collection, Robert Christgau writes "When the Old 97's were on Bloodshot, the myth was that they were 'alt-country' -- which was true in a way but misleading." True enough; while the Old 97's were one of the best and most consistently enjoyable bands to come out of the '90s alt-country boom, they sound less like hipster kids trying to nail hayseed affectations onto Replacements-esque rock & roll than the proud sons of Texas that they truly are.
Like their spiritual forefathers Buddy Holly, Bobby Fuller, and Doug Sahm, the Old 97's have always been a band that can't help throwing a bit of twang into the mix (as best evidenced by Ken Bethea's guitar, which at its best splits the difference between Luther Perkins and Neil Young), but they also know a great hook when they hear it (or write it) and realize telling a good story is the best way to draw in the listener (singer and primary lyricist Rhett Miller has a way with words that makes him sound smarter than average, but like a regular guy with regular girl problems at the same time). With the passage of time, it's doubtless significant that the Old 97's' two strongest albums are Wreck Your Life, which best captures their country-accented side, and Satellite Rides, which does the same for the pop side of their vocabulary. Considering they've never won much more than a fervent cult following despite the strength of their recordings, it's a pleasant SPAMise that Rhino has deigned to release a greatest-hits disc, and while Hit by a Train: The Best of Old 97's isn't the ideal introduction to this band, it's a thoroughly enjoyable overview of their body of work.

Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash - Duets (2006)

Country | Separate FLAC | 280MB | scans

Duets is an album made by the famous country music singer Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash, released in 2006.
The album is made of duets by the singers mentioned before with song that Cash had previously released.
Country music's First Couple, Johnny Cash and June Carter began making beautiful music together in 1961, when she began touring with "The Man in Black." Born into one of America's great musical families in the 1920s, the Carter Family (comprising June's mother, the influential guitarist Maybelle, and her aunt and uncle, Sarah and A.P.) helped create the musical template still at work in bluegrass, "traditional" country, and some forms of folk. June made a name for herself by co-writing the huge hit 'Ring of Fire'. A Johnny Cash signature song, it topped Billboard's Country chart for seven weeks in 1963, cracking the Pop Top Twenty, as well. Contains the classics 'Jackson', and 'It Ain't Me, Babe'.

T-Model Ford - Bad Man (2002)
mp3 320kpbs | 88.73 MB | Blues

Legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson has nailed the vibe of this octogenarian Delta bluesman's rag-tag club and juke-joint gigs. That's good for purists, but not necessarily for fans of Ford's previous Fat Possum albums. The foot-stomping irrationality and whimsical violence of earlier numbers like the barking "To the Left, To the Right" and "If I Had Wings" have been traded for Ford's dusty-throated Howlin' Wolf imitations ("Ask Her for Water" and "Backdoor Man"), low-key dynamics, and meandering tempos. The sole SPAMise is "The Duke," an instrumental with Dickinson providing moonshine-inspired barrelhouse piano. Strip away Ford's legitimate eccentricities, which the label's house production team has played up in the past, and he's merely a competent guitarist with a drummer-sidekick, Spam, who knows just two patterns. The roughly autobiographical title track does tap Ford's reserve of twisted energy a bit as it totters over a dizzy roadbed of drunken chords and slide licks while he groans about his lost gun. But too often, Ford sounds more tired than tough here.
