Roderick David "Rod" Stewart (born 10 January 1945) is a British singer and songwriter born and raised in London, England and currently residing in Epping.

With his distinctive raspy voice, Stewart came to prominence in the late 1960s and early '70s with The Jeff Beck Group and then The Faces. He launched his solo career in 1969 with his debut album An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down. His work with The Jeff Beck Group and The Faces proved to be influential on the formation of the heavy metal and punk rock genres, respectively. Both bands were also pioneers of blues-rock.

With his career in its fifth decade, Stewart has achieved numerous solo hit singles worldwide, most notably in the UK, where he has garnered six consecutive number one albums and his tally of 62 hit singles include 31 that reached the top 10, six of which gained the number one position. He has also had 16 top ten singles in the USA, with four of these reaching number one. His most-known solo hit singles are "Maggie May", "You Wear It Well", "Sailing", "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)", "Hot Legs", "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?", "Forever Young" and "Rhythm of My Heart." It has been estimated that Stewart's album and single sales total more than 250 million, earning him a place on the list of best-selling music artists

The first Jeff Beck Group formed in London in 1966 and included Jeff Beck (guitar), vocalist Rod Stewart, bassist Ronnie Wood and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. Beck signed a personal management contract with record producer and manager Mickie Most. The original group members were merely a backing group for Beck. Frustrated that Beck was not keen to be a solo act Mickie ceased managing him and his employee Peter Grant became manager of The Jeff Beck Group.
Grant had been a tour manager for The New Vaudeville Band and was aware of a new concert and album trend developing in the U.S.This meant that bands could be launched through concerts alone without a hit single. Beck's outfit was made for this new market and Grant tried without success to buy Beck's contract from Mickie Most. In early 1968 drummer Aynsley Dunbar had already left and was replaced briefly by Roy Cook and then Micky Waller. Grant arranged a successful six week tour of US.Grant used their reviews in newspapers such as The New York Times to secure a contract with Epic Records for a US release. On return to the UK Most left the project in the hands of Ken Scott snd the album Truth was released.
The lineup of Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Micky Waller and Nicky Hopkins toured the US to coincide with the release of Truth and the album climbed to number 15 in the Billboard charts. Jimi Hendrix joined them on stage during the 1968 US tour, jamming with Jeff Beck on stage. In 1969 The Jeff Beck Group appeared with Donovan on his single Barabajagal(Love is hot) and Micky Waller was replaced by drummer Tony Newman. After completing the next album Beck-Ola they toured the US for the last time with Nicky Hopkins. After Hopkins left they played Newport Jazz Festival but the band dissolved on the eve of the Woodstock Festival at which they were scheduled to appear. During a period of three years the band released three UK singles and two albums.

Faces (sometimes known as The Faces) were a rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces - Ronnie Lane (bass guitar), Ian McLagan (keyboards) and Kenney Jones (drums & percussion) - were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from The Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed The Faces.
The Faces released four studio albums and toured regularly through the autumn of 1975, although Stewart simultaneously pursued a solo recording career, and during the band's final year Wood also toured with The Rolling Stones, whom he later joined.
