Background information (in french):
Houssein Toulali, le chantre du Melhoun, ou une vie entière dédiée à l'Art
Il est né en 1924 à Toulal, proche banlieue de Meknès. Il a travaillé la terre en y mettant toute son âme et sa sensibilité. Il ne se contentait pas d'aimer les fleurs; il aimait la musique avec la même ferveur. Ainsi qu'il avait coutume de le dire lui-même : "son amour de la musique était tel qu'il allait à pied depuis Toulal jusqu'à l'ancienne Meknès pour écouter les grands maîtres comme Cheikh Benaïssa, Cheikh Bertal, El Khiati père, Ibn Abdallah, Ben Amar et tant d'autres" …

A ses débuts, il a appris les chants modernes et ceux en vogue au Moyen-Orient. Puis il a commencé à apprendre les qassidas de melhoun.
Il avait une belle et douce voix faite pour cette poésie. Même s'il ne savait pas par cœur les poésies, les grands Maîtres ont cependant commencé à faire appel à lui, tant ils étaient séduits par sa Voix. Berbérophone, son élocution et sa diction étaient parfaites quand il chantait le Melhoun, laissant sous le charme Maîtres et public.
Puis il a songé à préserver coûte que coûte ce trésor musical en créant une Ecole de Melhoun. De cette école, sont issus des artistes portant l'empreinte "toulalienne" (voix, diction, élocution).
En 1958, Moulay Ahmed Lemderi, grand musicien d'arabo-andalou fait appel à lui pour lui donner une place de choix dans son orchestre tant ses mérites étaient grands et a vu dès cette date que Toulali deviendrait un immense artiste au service du Melhoun, que Houssein Toulali deviendrait la Référence du Melhoun.

Et pourtant l'objectif premier de Lemderi n'était pas de se faire accompagner par Toulali mais bien de lui enseigner la théorie musicale.
D'ailleurs, il suffit de l'écouter chanter, de se laisser pénétrer par cet Art du Melhoun et vous sentez l'importance de son travail tout entier dédié au Melhoun.
Pour autant, il ne s'est pas contenté de chanter le Melhoun ; il a accompagné de grands ensembles, a participé à des groupes tant sa soif de connaissances musicales était inextinguible. Il voulait aussi insuffler un air nouveau au Melhoun et assurer ainsi sa pérennité.
Il a travaillé en compagnie de Jil Jilala sur de nombreux spectacles, a enregistré plusieurs émissions de télévision ainsi qu'une cassette.
Est-il utile de rappeler l'enregistrement de "Chemaa" (la bougie) de Mohamed Ould Arzin, de "Chaada" (le rayon de miel) de Benslimane ou bien encore "Mezin o solek" (Ton amitié m'est précieuse) de Sidi Abdelkader El Alami et pour finir Lotf Allah El Ghafi de Hadj Ahmed El Rabli, etc …

Toulali est le seul artiste qui a pu conduire le Melhoun jusqu'aux grandes scènes internationales. Le premier il a enseigné le Melhoun au Conservatoire du Ministère de la culture et au Conservatoire Municipal de Meknès.
Aujourd'hui, beaucoup chantent le Melhoun et le doivent à Toulali et à son école. Son charisme et son mimétisme sont à l'origine de bien des vocations.
Il a occupé une chaire à l'Orchestre de la Télévision et Radio marocaine qui rassemblait les meilleurs éléments comme Cheikh Benaïssa El Fassi, El Hadj Tahmi El Arouchi, Mohamed El Oufir, Benghanem, Nasseh El Filali, etc …
Il a été le premier interprète de Melhoun au théâtre en compagnie de Tayeb Siddiqi dans une pièce intitulée "Noor o déjoor", suivie de Harraz et a travaillé également avec Abdeslam Chraïbi.
Il a joué du théâtre diffusé à la télévision dans une émission "Musk el Lil".
Il a tourné un documentaire musical sur le Melhoun avec Izza Genini dans sa série "Maroc corps et âme".
Beaucoup de poésies ont été interprétées par les grands Maîtres. Mais la plupart étaient inconnues du public jusqu'à l'arrivée de Toulali, à la voix si belle, si particulière que l'on appelle "filali", Toulali devenue la Référence.

Lorsque vous entendez sa voix, vous sentez toute la force du Sahara et toute la douceur des dattes du Sahara ; Cette force et cette douceur ont donné une puissance inégalée à son interprétation du melhoun.
Autodidacte, il a cependant été l'égal des grands en matière d'enseignement. Tout l'amour qui était en lui, il l'a mis au service de son Art. Il remplissait tous les suffrages et faisait l'unanimité car c'était un homme de cœur, un homme de Dieu.
Un jour, au cours d'un entretien qu'il accordait à un journaliste, ce dernier lui posa la question de savoir qui entre sa famille et l'art passait en premier. Il a répondu : …"Dieu !
Car si tu aimes Dieu, Dieu te le rend au centuple et te facilite le cours de ton existence…"

Son existence fut une vie de dévouement absolu au service de son art. La discrétion, le silence étaient ses compagnons et ne il s'occupait en aucune façon des coulisses du milieu artistique.
Il est le seul à avoir enregistré autant de poésies de Melhoun (près de 43 cassettes). Tous les grands thèmes de la vie ont été abordés tels que : Tawassoulat (Prières à Dieu), Madh (Louanges au Prophète), Hob (achaki) Amour, sur la nature (rabiiet, sapouhi et dahbia), sur le rire (tarjamat), sur le vin divin (saqi et el khamriyat) mais aussi le football etc …

Toulali vit parmi nous de toute éternité. Il a laissé pour la postérité une école de référence. Vous ne pouvez parler de melhoun sans évoquer Toulali. L'un ne va pas sans l'autre. Ils sont à tout jamais associés.
Un hommage national était prévu pour cet artiste qui a tant donné au Maroc, à son peuple, à son Art mais la Mort est venue le chercher un lundi matin, le 7 décembre 1998, laissant derrière lui tristesse et désolation mais laissant aussi une école, des élèves, des enregistrements, un nom, le sien à tout jamais dans nos coeurs.
Les quelques lignes consacrées à cet artiste hors du commun sont évidemment bien loin de constituer un hommage et néanmoins sont le témoignage et le gage de ma profonde vénération à ce grand homme.

Chalf Hassan
Background information
Chalf Hassan is a young musician and singer from Morocco (Casablanca). He was born into a religious family, was steeped in Koranic culture but also became adept at a range of local percussion and stringed instruments. His music is based on traditional folk and classical songs given a distinctively personal treatment which he has developed since he first came to London in 1984. He played throughout Europe with Arab, Western and African Musicians for years before crossing cultural barriers to create his Arab-Spanish fusion.
With his lute, drums and an ever changing line-up of musicians Hassan started his carrier playing with groups and performed for theatre companies all over Morocco. He was also a member of professional orchestras and has formed a couple of groups that were named after him.
He is expert at playing many different and complex rhythms and music. For this he was invited by Hossam Ramzy to join Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (ex Led Zeppelin) on their historic reunion 1995/96 World tour.

A virtuoso pianist, Alaoui has performed in concert with such Moroccan artists as Djamchid Chemirani, Pedro Soler, Hameed Khan, Pablo Cueco, Hughes de Courson, and Luis Llach and has composed and played music for many of the country's top choreographers. Born in Fez, Morocco, Alaoui enrolled in the Conservatory of Rabat at the age of six. In addition to studying classical piano, she studied traditional Arabic-Andalusian music and Moroccan and Middle Eastern dance. She published her first collection of poems at the age of ten. Although she studied philosophy and linguistics (Arabic, French, and Spanish) at the University of Rabat, Alaoui continued to focus on music. She studied Persian classical music with Djalal Akhbari and European medieval music with Henri Agnel.
