A NOTE FROM FLORY JAGODA ...
My first CD, Kantikas Di Mi Nona (Songs of my Grandmother) (I) relived the happy memories of my family in Bosnia through songs that my Nona, a Sephardic folksinger, taught me. Her gift of these songs was the most valuable possession I brought with me from Europe.
Memories of Sarajevo, (2) the second recording, commemorates the songs of a vibrant Sephardic community in the city of my birth. 500 years after their forced exile, the Sephardim in Bosnia still sang songs of Spain. I recorded the song, La Yave De Espanya (The Key From Spain) for them.
I loved working on my third CD, La Nona Kanta, (The Grandmother Sings) FloryJagoda and Family (3) because at that time I was a Nona myself. I wrote songs for my grandchildren and recorded them with their parents, Betty, Elliot and Lori.
The title of my fourth CD is Arvoliko, (4) the little tree that stood as a silent witness to the horrible end of the Altaras Clan, my Bosnian family, and still today is the only marker of the mass grave where 42 Altaras members were thrown after being massacred during World War II. This cruel scene constantly haunts my soul, and the new songs that I wrote for this CD were etched with pain and melancholy.
I have tried to contrast the songs of sad memories with the happier sounds of the talented musicians and singers who have been studying with me. They, along with my family, have joined in my quest to keep the rich and colorful musical traditions of the Sephardim alive and vibrant.
I arrived in America as a war bride in 1946 with a suitcase full of memories .... good memories as well as some very ugly ones. So many of us who survived the Holocaust had one thing in common ... our silence. However, as we grew older, we began to feel the need to share our pain and also our many happy memories with the world. I poured my memories into songs. At 81 years old I am making Arvoliko, my final recording, completing a series of the four musical stages in my life.

Background information:
Since the end of the Second World War, Yiddish culture has been gradually on a decline. Those people who were able to experience the golden age of Yiddish theater and music firsthand are now, unfortunately, largely gone. The new generation of singers does not compare with those writers, artists and performers who drew from their own personal experiences to produce works infused with a tremendous richness.

However one jewel remains: Myriam Fuks. Born into a family of Yiddish singers with whom she toured since childhood, Myriam's performances fill her audiences with awe. She delivers every musical phrase with a naturalness and intimacy that otherwise seems to have been lost forever.

What Myriam offers is simply the fruit of a life spent immersed in Yiddish culture. Yiddish – her mother tongue – is her way of life. Her life has been a voyage, often alone, but with a myriad of memories, jokes, suffering, and joy... in short, A Life. And her music reflects the depth of her experience.

The performers:
Eric Berman (tuba, string bass) has performed with the San Antonio Symphony, the American Symphony, the American Concert Band and a variety of jazz and chamber groups. He holds the degrees of Juris Doctor and Doctor of Philosophy (Music), and is a specialist in entertainment law.

Ken Maltz (clarinet) first became involved with Yiddish music as a young boy when he was often called upon to provide music for family occasions. A founding member of Kapelye since the band's inception in 1979, Ken has performed in hundreds of appearances on stage, television, radio and film throughout North America and Europe. As one of the early pioneers of the klezmer revival, he has received critical acclaim from both the domestic and international press. Such diverse sources as The New York Times and The Berlin Morning Post have spoken of his performances in the most glowing terms. Ever conscious of the importance of both promoting Yiddish culture and passing it on to future generations, Ken can often be found at festivals, conferences, master classes and workshops; instructing students both young and old in the art of the klezmer. Indeed, his love for klezmer music and his ability as a teacher have learned him a following of students on three continents.
Peter Sokolow (keyboard and vocals) has appeared with klezmer musicians Dave Tarras, the Epstein brothers, Sid Beckerman, Ray Musiker and others of equal renown. Among his orchestrations are eight albums of Chabad (Lubavitch) nigunim, two albums for Shlomo Carlebach, the off-Broadway musical "The Golden Land", the Yiddish musical "Heintige Kinder" and the score for the documentary film "Partisans of Vilna." In addition to Mr. Sokolow's work in the field of Jewish music, he is a highly regarded performer in society , Irish and" pop" orchestras and enjoys a fine reputation as a stride pianist a la Fats Waller.

Di Grine Kuzine was formed in Berlin in 1993. The band plays music from the heart of Europe. Music, which on its journey through time and over continents has constantly reinvented itself. It is this cosmopolitan, klezmer balkan and who knows what else which inspires and motivates the band. The result is very personal. They love what they play. Perhaps that is the reason for the heart-quickening freshness with which they have won themselves a loyal audience in their 300 concerts over the last 3 years, an audience which spans all generations. They released "Klezmer's Paradise" in 1999.

Biography:
A driving force behind the neo-klezmer movement since its inception in the early 1980s, Andy Statman, newly signed to Sony Classical, remains an extraordinary paradox: a musician devoted to musical tradition who also continues to break new artistic ground. A celebrated mandolin player in the "Newgrass" movement of the 1970s, Andy Statman (clarinettist/composer/bandleader) has recently reinvigorated yet another realm of traditional musicmaking - klezmer - with his own particular blend of virtuosity, and originality.
The Hidden Light (SK 60814), Andy Statman's first release on Sony Classical, draws upon his commitment to traditional repertoire as well as his singular capacity as a composer in the klezmer revival style.
Fronting a quartet that features such jazz luminaries as pianist Bruce Barth, drummer Bob Weiner and bassist Scott Lee, Statman leads the listener into equal measures of traditional and new music. This recording marks a new direction for Statman, in that it combines the spiritual depth of klezmer ¬ captured here in the niggunim, melodies from the mystical Chassidim of Judaism ¬ with the improvisational qualities of jazz.
A founding member of the Newgrass collective "Country Cookin'" in the early seventies, he marked his turn to klezmer with three recordings by the Andy Statman Klezmer Orchestra. Subsequent releases included a collection of traditional Jewish songs with mandolin - great David Grisman and another collection of klezmer recordings with Itzhak Perlman.
Acknowledged among the most authoritative of klezmer revivalists, Andy Statman was the pupil of master clarinettist Dave Tarras, who bequeathed his instruments to Statman when he died.

André Taïeb lives in France and sings at the Montpellier synagogue. This is a beautiful example of piyyutim (liturgical poems in Hebrew), which were first developed in Palestine and Babylonia. In the 10th century, Andalusian Spain became the greatest productive center of piyyut. After the expulsion of Jews from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition of 1492, piyyutim spread from Yemen to Tunisia and from Morocco to Aleppo, Syria.

Oi Va Voi are a British band that takes its name from a Yiddish-derived exclamation popular in modern Hebrew meaning, approximately "Oh, dear!". It is an experimental band from London, England, which formed in the late 1990s. Their sound draws on Jewish music from both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, including both klezmer and Ladino music, as well as Eastern European, especially Hungarian folk music, as well as contemporary electronic music.

Oi Va Voi makes music that may owe as much, or more, to current electronica and trance dance beats as to traditional Jewish music. The result is a refreshing, danceable - how could the hip hop wedding of klezmer and electronica be anything else?
