JOHN DENVER -- WHOSE GARDEN WAS THIS (1970)

Album: Whose Garden Was This
Artist: John Denver
Genre: Country
Year Released: 1970
Bitrate: 192k bps

Customer Review:

I could not help but write this review in response to the 2 existing reviews. Yes there is a seriousness to this album that is somewhat uncharacteristic of the John Denver that became famous, but this is an extremely important work in the progression of his career. The artist at this point is a mid-twenties up and coming folksinger (this is the predecessor of his breakout, Poems, Prayers, & Promises). Whose Garden Was This establishes Denver's mastery of covers (Lennon/McCartney, Tom Paxton, etc.) with some fairly interesting arrrangements of Eleanor Rigby, Mr Bojangles (I do agree with the one reviewer that this one is better than the NGDB's version and would add that this is the definitive version of this song), etc. The originals are strong as well. Sail Away Home is appropriately dark, but not without optimism. Yes the high-voiced female singers were a bit much, but a sign of the times. The song is timeless and with some updated production would sound as if it were written yesterday. Yes if you are looking for later day John Denver (that singer who enjoyed great commercial success at the cost of becoming a caricature of himself), don't buy this album. If, on the other hand, you want a glimpse of a young artist genuinely exploring his singing, poetry, and developing social/environmental consciousness, get this album. Then make certain you put this, Aerie (probably his best), and Farewell Andromeda right alongside Poems, Prayers, & Promises and Rocky Mountain High. These albums are John Denver... at his artistic best. --Anonymous

JOHN DENVER -- AERIE (1971)

Album: Aerie

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
Listeners acquainted with the John Denver of "Rocky Mountain High" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders" may be surprised to discover a slightly more gritty folkster in some of these album cuts. Kris Kristofferson's "Casey's Last Ride" is delivered as a spare, ghostly lament, while "She Won't Let Me Fly Away" has a bluesy, urban feel. "Readjustment Blues" is a sobering account of the unwelcome treatment experienced by soldiers returning home from the Vietnam War, and is highlighted by Paul Griffin's haunting organ playing. However, Denver's trademark uplifting nature-oriented songs make up a good half of the tracks. The soaring "The Eagle and the Hawk," in fact, is the centerpiece of the album. Though it's a less well-known work in his oeuvre, Aerie is worth seeking out to get a more complete picture of the artist's range. --Rob Caldwell

Propelled by the title track, Rocky Mountain High became John Denver's first Top Ten album. Though Denver still couldn't figure out how to fill out an entire album without covering his betters (in this case, old favorites The Beatles and John Prine), he and his steady backup musicians, bassist Dick Kniss and guitarist Mike Taylor, were evolving into an exuberant folk-country sound that would prove enormously appealing over the next few years. The album contained one of Denver's finest ballads, "Goodbye Again," as well as one of his better old songs, "For Baby (For Bobbie)." --William Ruhlmann

JOHN DENVER -- FAREWELL ANDROMEDA (1973)

Album: Farewell Andromeda
Artist: John Denver
Genre: Country
Year Released: 1973
Bitrate: 192k bps

Customer Review:

This album was released when John was at the apex of his popularity, and the songs on this album served to continue his ride into the stratosphere. From the wry and yet poignant "I'd Rather Be A Cowboy" to the incredible smash hit "Farewell Andromeda", John Denver showcases his incredible talents here. Denver was instrumental in firmly fixing the younger generation's sights and sensibilities upon the outdoors in general and on environmental issues in particular, and he nearly single-handedly began the outdoor backpacking, hiking, and orienteering movements after popularizing the idea of a more close and intimate human relationship with mother nature. Therefore, more than a few of the young baby-boomers, like John, were more than ready for the kind of unconventional intimacy with nature he sang about so effortlessly and so elegantly. From "Zachary And Jennifer" to an evocative and almost ethereal "Rocky Mountain Suite'", Denver's songs soar in their description of the beauties of a simple and natural life and in being close to the "great wide-open'.

Denver also does an unusually good rendition of "Berkeley Woman", written by a friend but usually identified with Denver himself. He shows that even a sugary sweetheart like him can have some "colorful" thoughts about women. Indeed, the simple and well arranged acoustic blast of infectious energy and sweet simplicity that was John Denver is here in spades, whether it be in original songs like "Sweet Misery" or with covers of others' work, the kid who had adopted the majesty of Colorado for his setting and his inspiration sings simply, sentimentally, and superbly about the simple pleasures and undying verities of a homespun and simple life well lived. My special favorites here are "Berkeley Woman" and "I'd Rather be A Cowboy", and I always wondered why they weren't bigger hits for John. Hearing John sing in his youthful enthusiasm about what turns him on is still a rare treat. As with many of his albums, the message outlives the messenger. It has successfully weathered all the seasons since with its energy and beauty intact. I love this album, and I think you will too. Enjoy. --Barron Laycock

AN EVENING WITH JOHN DENVER (1974)

Album: An Evening with John Denver
Artist: John Denver
Genre: Country
Year Released: 1974
Bitrate: 192k bps

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
For those who know or have heard of John Denver, his life, his songs, and his experiences have been legendary. Bursting onto the scene in the early '70s, Denver used his skill of folk-rock and mastery of composition to bring light and heartfelt spirit to the world of music. This compilation is remarkably engineered and produced. "I've been looking forward to this for a long, long time," said Denver during this live recording for RCA at the California Universal Amphitheater in August/September of 1974. He also tells the audience, most attentive to say the least, that he worked on his songs late into the evening on the beach's lifeguard stands the first time he arrived in California in the late '60s. It was a long journey to the top of singing stardom, just eating in order to play for people in the early days. This is a different record from those of his individual ones. It is here that Denver is backed up by a phenomenal orchestra conducted by Lee Holdridge. Dick Kniss is there to back him up on bass guitar. Steve Weisberg adds the electric guitar, steel pedal, and dobro. Herb Lovelle sits in on drums, Hal Blaine adds the percussion, and John Sommers puts added touches with rhythm guitar, banjo, fiddle, and mandolin. The album begins with Denver's song of encouragement, "Farewell Andromeda." "Welcome to my morning/Welcome to my happiness/It pleases me to have you here for just a little while," sings Denver. Then it's off to the races with the uptempo Beatles cover "Mother Nature's Son," in which Denver received much praise for playing, keeping the spirit of the Fab Four alive. "Summer" takes the listener to their favorite vacation spot in the midst of a memory-filled season. He throws in Randy Sparks' song "Toledo" for laughs. The artist receives from the audience a strong reception for the hilarious tune. A song about Denver's uncle, "Matthew," brings to the listeners a lesson "that joy is the thing you should be raised on/And love is just a way to live and die." Denver gives the audience his version of Jim Connor's "Grandma's Feather Bed," another crowd pleaser. After quite an entertaining ending, he introduces his beautiful song "Annie's Song" in sentimental fashion, a song written and played in love of his wife. As the record seems to show, the list of songs flow with a great emphasis of highs and lows, such like the momentum of a roller coaster. It is after the soothing, sweet ballad for Annie that Denver puts on all the stops, pressing full forward with the intense and passionate tune "The Eagle and the Hawk." This song has the theme of the environment written all over its melody, as does nearly all of the artist's work. Another ballad is played with sheer eloquence and sincerity by Denver, "My Sweet Lady." This is certainly an album filled with the artist's best, and one must wonder how he manages to fit all these tunes into one concert for the listeners' enjoyment. A wonderful version of "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" ignites the audience with another rousing of applause, as do "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and his most well-known hit, "Rocky Mountain High." This is a must even for the casual John Denver listener. Only by fully taking in the music can listeners see his vision of good music and passion for protection of the environment. --Shawn M. Haney

JOHN DENVER -- BACK HOME AGAIN (1974)

Album: Back Home Again
Artist: John Denver
Genre: Country
Year Released: 1974
Bitrate: 192k bps

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
It is here you find the gift and talent of John Denver in one of the brighter and more spirited moments of his career. The record Back Home Again features a whole plethora of uplifting, merry, and lyrically witty songs written and arranged by Denver and played with the most charming and delightful of backup bands. Highlights include the humor of "Grandma's Feather Bed," the poignancy of "Matthew," and the spirit and delight of "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." A well-orchestrated recording under his label, RCA, Denver makes clear to his fans and listeners of new and old that the "music is in you." Opening up the second side of this 1974 recording is the ever so romantic tearjerker, a song for his wife, "Annie's Song," certainly one of John Denver's finest achievements. The highlight of the record finds Denver playing six-string guitar, with Steve Weisberg on lead guitar, Dick Kniss on bass, John Sommers on mandolin, and Jim Gordon on percussion, with the creativity of Lee Holdridge and his orchestral arrangement. Two more songs come along during this 12-song set with the hearty "Sweet Surrender," and the heartfelt "This Old Guitar." Lazy days, and summer days, and windy days, and rainy days may encourage the listener to find him- or herself listening to this recording under a shady tree, as the joyful tune "Cool an' Green an' Shady" illustrates. John Denver pulls out all the stops to create, and experience himself, one of his finer recordings of the '70s. --Shawn M. Haney

JOHN DENVER -- WINDSONG (1975)

Album: Windsong

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
Windsong was released at the peak of John Denver's career, and rode to Number One on the strength of his previous success, and the epic "Calypso," which happened to provide the touchstone for the album. Essentially, Windsong is an album about communing with nature, and an overall thematic thrust is missing from many other Denver records. There may not be that many songs that match "Calypso," but many come close, helping elevate Windsong into Denver's front rank of albums. --Stephen Thomas Erlewine

JOHN DENVER -- SPIRIT (1976)

Customer Review:

This is a wonderful example of John Denver's wonderful talents as a singer and a songwriter, one produced at the height of his popularity in the mid-1970s. Here we see some of the monster hits that propelled him into amazing popularity and superstardom in the early 1970s. In his heyday no one was outselling his albums or out-booking John for concert appearances, and considering the incredible talents on the scene at the time, that is a pretty good indication of just how popular he was, and just how universal John Denver's appeal was. No one else sang of the wide-open possibilities and seemingly limitless prospects for a good life awaiting those who would free themselves from the bonds that confined them and just dare to soar along with him in the wild open spaces.
All the tracks here are terrific, from "Come And Let Me Look Into Your Eyes", a lovely and sentimental love song, one often performed in live performances, to "Sad Song', another monster hit he became so famous for. His paeans to appreciating the beauties of nature and the natural life were modeled after a much earlier song included in this re-issue of the album, a lovely work called "Whose Garden Was This?". Denver more than any of his contemporaries actively caught the public's imagination regarding the wonders of the natural environment, and in a time when environmental concerns were splashed all over the headlines and the evening news, John's vision of popular concern for and stewardship of the natural world was immensely important. This album represents a wonderful example of the amazing talents of John, made even as he continued to thrill a whole generation with his own perspective of a meaningful life lived in the natural splendor of nature. I know you will enjoy this as well as all of his others. Far out! --Barron Laycock

JOHN DENVER -- I WANT TO LIVE (1977)

Album: I Want to Live
Artist: John Denver
Genre: Country
Year Released: 1977
Bitrate: 192k bps

Customer Review:

John Denver's 1977 release "I Want To Live" is one of my all time favorite albums by my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I concur to what others have written that this album would have been a superior follow up to the smash hit Windsong rather than the album Spirit. After the death of Elvis Presley, John Denver inherited the core members of his band, phenomenal guitarists James Burton and keyboardist Glen D Harding. They provided John with a very polished sound. The overall tone of this album, although dominated by guitars and without a reliance on orchestration, is a comforting mellow smooth texture of easy listening music. The new band enabled John to step away from his folk and country roots to a more contemporary sound. Although in the future John Denver would move too far from that traditional formula, in my opinion, that is not the case with this CD.

The album opens with "How Can I Leave You Again?" a beautifully written sorrow filled ballad John wrote after having to leave Annie to begin filming the movie "Oh God!" Although it only went to number 44 on the pop charts, it reached number 2 on the Adult Contemporary charts. This was followed up the same chart by "It Amazes Me" an upbeat song of celebration which reached number 9. The title song, which John wrote during his involvement on the Presidential Commission on World and Domestic Hunger, reached number 10 on the Adult Contemporary charts and its message of the preciousness of life displays John's tremendous vocal range. The CD also contains one of my favorite songs that John ever wrote: "Singing Skies and Dancing Waters." It is song about faith and renewal and the places where one can see evidence of the Divine. The song "Tradewinds" could have come from the pen of Jimmy Buffett and is a mellow homage to just relaxing on a tropical beach. "To The Wild Country" is another song about renewal. This time John weaves a poignant ballad about conservation of the land with finding restoration in the wilderness and mountains of Alaska. "Druthers" is an upbeat country/blues number that has grown on me through the years. The remainder of the CD is filled with songs John Denver covered from various friends of his. "Ripplin' Waters" was written by Jimmy Ibbotson of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Bet on the Blues" was written by Tom Paxton, The great ballad about social protest, "Thirsty Boots", was written by the brilliant folksinger/songwriter Eric Anderson. "Dearest Esmeralda" was written by long time friend and collaborator Bill Danoff. The cover tunes, plus John's original compositions, combine to create one of the best albums John ever recorded during his illustrious career. --W. Foley

JOHN DENVER -- AUTOGRAPH (1980)

Album: Autograph
Artist: John Denver
Genre: Country
Year Released: 1980
Bitrate: 192k bps

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
John Denver's music has always expressed themes of peace, harmony, and nature, and there is yet another dose of this spirit right here for those who love him. Imagine John Denver, the ever-so charismatic, message-bearing singer/songwriter/prophet, delivering songs with a high-intensity group of fellow musicians. It is here, during the recording sessions of Autograph, that Denver pulls out his magic, singing joyous mountain-music jams and sweet, teary-eyed ballads with his backup group, his friends the Sharks. Johnny and the Sharks come through here with grace and pizzazz, delivering messages of laughter, hope, and wisdom through strong folk storytelling. The opening of the record sustains with rich color and enchantment, attached to a wistful, lighthearted jam. "Dancing With the Mountains" is certainly danceable, as much as "In My Heart" is smooth and easygoing, ready for the slow-dance scene. "The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" is filled with texture, percussive wittiness, and vibrant, long-lasting jamming. The Sharks and Denver go airborne during this tune, appearing to soar to higher heights with eagles in cobalt mountain skies. Denver's merry charisma shines through with delightful resonance during his yodeling and singing in "Wrangell Mountain Song," a song about how "time goes by so slowly": a song about the excitement of anticipation. Dashing further away from Denver's pop-folk rock ballad formula is the hauntingly beautiful tune "Whalebones and Crosses," a charming, prophetic statement of grief, gratitude, and compassion for those sailors and loved ones, those fallen fathers lost to the perils of sea. "American Child" rings clear with visions of the icy blue seas of Alaska, and the adventurous trek of a child to pursue his dreams, to find a sense of solitude and fulfillment. The land of the midnight sun soon unfolds into the following tune of deep lyrical sentiment, "You May Say the Battle Is Over." "Most men are ruthless, but some will still weep when the gifts we were given are gone," is a strong statement of a melody that carries themes of peace, and of those who wish and pray, "let the war be over." Autograph is a genuine and sentimental statement displaying the strong and crafty songwriting of John Denver. --Shawn M. Haney

JOHN DENVER -- ONE WORLD (1986)

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
Having lightened up on his political concerns and domestic strife on the cover-filled Dreamland Express, John Denver returned to both on One World. On the title track, he adopted the persona of a Caribbean man complaining about his homeland being referred to as the Third World, and hinting about revolution. On "Let Us Begin (What Are We Making Weapons For?)," he managed both to take on the farm crisis, and to expound on pacifism in the same song. "It's A Possibility" closed out the album with a "We Are The World"-like anthem about ending sorrow and suffering. On his personal agenda, Denver seemed more hopeful than he had for much of the decade, producing two songs about falling in love again. But both of them had old copyright dates, and the most recent romantic reflection, "I Can't Escape," indicated he was still carrying the torch — "Sometimes I wish it was ten years ago," he sang to his lost love. And he had other reasons to wish that. One World didn't sell well enough to make the charts, and RCA Records, for which Denver had recorded numerous platinum albums, dropped him after 17 years. -- William Ruhlmann

As one of the most successful recording artists of our time, John Denver has become an undeniable and integral part of the American popular music scene with a career that has spanned 14 gold and eight platinum albums. There has never been a better time to sing out for the planet and its people, and The Flower That Shattered the Stone is the work of a concerned global citizen, vividly heard in the title cut, co-written by Denver, Joe Henry and John Jarvis, and revisited throughout the album with songs by Jimmy Webb, Chuck Pyle and Denver himself. His voice still rings true, much as it did in his instantly recognizable hits like "Sunshine on My Shoulders," "Annie's Song," "Take Me Home," "Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High." With his newly formed record label, Windstar Records, and the collaboration through American Gramaphone, John Denver is poised and ready to reach the heart of a new generation. --Backroads Music/Heartbeats

JOHN DENVER -- HIS GREATEST HITS AND FINEST PERFORMANCES (1997)

Album: His Greatest Hits and Finest Performances

Year Released: 1997

Editorial Review:

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1997--While fans mourn the passing of John Denver, his voice is celebrated in a definitive career retrospective collection available now from Reader's Digest Music.

"It's the most comprehensive John Denver collection ever," says Gary Theroux, Reader's Digest Senior Music Editor. "And I had the privilege of interviewing John just one year ago for the liner notes."

Theroux asked Denver, "Have you ever thought of how you ultimately would like to be remembered?" John Denver replied: "I think what people are going to remember about me are my songs. I have worked really hard to find out who I am. I've had the courage to do what I think is right: to be true to myself and write the things that come out of me. That is how I hope my children remember me."

Unique Collection

"John Denver: His Greatest Hits and Finest Performances" is the first and only box set to include all of his top country, pop and easy-listening hits. This collection also includes the best-loved and most-requested songs from his many albums plus 10 tunes from his most legendary concert ever (Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles on Aug. 26, 1974, where he recorded the No. 1 smash "Thank God I'm A Country Boy"). All are the original recordings.

John Denver rarely granted interviews and in them usually avoided talking about his music. On Oct. 10, 1996, he did talk with Reader's Digest Senior Music Editor Gary Theroux, who spent three hours collecting Denver comments spanning his entire career. For the first time, Denver revealed the sometimes funny, sometimes moving and always remarkable stories behind his dozen of hits, from "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Annie's Song" to "Sunshine On My Shoulders," "Rocky Mountain High" and more. Denver worked closely with Theroux in choosing, assembling and programming the 60 souvenirs-in-song that make up this definitive career retrospective. Theroux's interview with Denver -- one of the last he ever granted and certainly the most extensive -- makes up the bulk of the 24-page booklet of program notes -- the exclusive Listener's Guide -- which accompanies the Denver treasury.

JOHN DENVER -- CHRISTMAS LIKE A LULLABY (1998)

Editorial Review:

Amazon.com
John Denver's more sentimental Christmas release, Christmas Like a Lullaby, draws upon his favorite religious tunes. Even when he was happy, Denver's voice rang with a melancholy air, and it's this quality that makes his version of "Away in a Manger" all the more somber. "The First Noel" and "The Little Drummer Boy" also benefit from his folky tinge. But the real unexpected wonder here is when Denver steps out of the spiritual aspect of the season for a heart-wrenching cover of "Blue Christmas." For all those who never thought of John Denver as a romantic type, this ought to erase those doubts. True fans will probably already have all of Denver's holiday releases, but for its spiritual/sentimental theme, Lullaby may be the best. --Steve Gdula
